have jaguar xjr will this work as a replacement for the exsisting sub

It's a different shape (Dimensions: (W x H x D) mm: 342 x 80 x 238 mm) and the wiring will probably be different to the Jaguar multi plug. These are meant to be fitted to the floor underneath seats, so I'm not sure if the mountings will work ok, upside down under the Jaguar parcel shelf.

does this need to be connected to the battery?

Yes. It is supplied with a positive cable with an in line fuse, and a ground cable and a switched live cable so it will switch off when the car is locked. All cables that are needed are included with the product and has instructions with a diagram for wiring the product to your car.
