Does a fusion splicer at this price point work?......Yup
Curiousity got the best of me on this purchase. I spliced a fair amount of fiber about 10 years ago and have many hours on the fujikura splicers from that era. This unit is not quite there on the fit and finish but its darn close. It has all the calibration features I had used on my previous unit. The software and buttons even feel really close the fujikura. I was able to power the unit on, strip the fiber with the included FIS stripper, cleave it using the included cleaver, drop it in the machine, and I had a spliced fiber in the matter of a few minutes. I didnt have to read the instructions or anything. Out of the box its set to align and splice as soon you close the cover. I changed that in the settings so I can inspect the cleave angle. A feature that seems to be missing is the machine telling you if the cleave angles are in tolerance for a good splice. Overall I was super impressed it was able align and splice the fiber without any tweaking or adjustments. The included tools are good enough for the occasional job. This would be a great unit for a small IT team looking to install or repair fiber a few times per year without breaking the bank. It should pay for itself in one or two jobs. My biggest concern is the support when the unit needs to be cleaned and calibrated. With the fujikura it was expected to send the unit in for service every often. I dont see that happening after reading the website. The unit has a 7 day replacement warranty and 1 year warranty on repairs. They appears to be located in China so I would not expect customer service to be responsive and shipping the splicer in for repair will not be worth it. If you dont mind that risk, this could be a great light duty unit
