Q: can you play movies from an external HDD?

Yes I have used HDD and Plug and play memory stick no problem.

Q: Does this upscale ordinary (non-blu ray) dvds so that they look better, too?

I own an LG Oled 4K flat screen 55" TV the 4K content/programmes on which are Amazing. I also have the Sony BDP-6700 Blue Ray DVD player with 4K UHD upscale features. I do not think the DVD player is able to upscale non Blue Ray DVD's to 4K quality. It is likely however that the playback of non Blue Ray DVD's are slightly better. Hope this helps?

As far as I know all Blu Ray players require HDMI leads please bear in mind the following points. 1. Later model Blu Ray players seem to only work with `version 2` leads these are much thicker than the standard ones ands not all leads are marked V2 so go for the ones that are suitable for 4k televisions and 4k upscale players. 2. Make sure `BOTH` television and player are switched off from the MAINS BEFORE you connect the HDMI lead, you can sometimes blow either the television or player end of the port you are attaching the lead to . This means you will end up with no sound or picture and a T.V. repairman bill. 3. Bear in mind the longer the HDMI lead is you could loose some picture quality.

YES ITS BRILLIANT I HAVE A WIDE RANGE OF MULTICHANNEL SACD'S AND THE SOUND ALMOST AS GOOD AS MY £1000.00 PLAYER I NOW HAVE 3 OF THESE.
