Here come the witches
First of all, I picked this up on a whim. I saw it at the library and grabbed it because it had Jim Henson's name on it without really knowing anything about it. Second, I won't say that this is necessarily better than the books I've been reviewing lately at 4/5. I enjoyed it immensely though and that's good enough for me.Witches is a collection of stories based on folk and fairy tales. Each of the four stories features a witch in some way and has a different writer. Some of these are adapted quite a bit from their original format because they are being told in a different medium. Despite the difficulty of adapting them, I thought they worked very well. The setting for the stories is varied, as is the artwork associated with each one.The illustrations are absolutely what enamored me about these stories. They are beautiful pieces that evoke multiple emotions. The different approach to the illustrations sets them apart in a great way. I'm not sure if it was purposeful, but each story seems to represent one of the four seasons. It's a subtle aspect to them that helps tie them together, aside from the obvious witch connection. I would definitely read this one again.

My favorite story of the bunch is #2
This collection is an absolute must for any "Storyteller" fan. My favorite story of the bunch is #2, which I believe is about the snow witch. The book contains all 4 Witch stories, and each is distinctively drawn to the fashion of the story being told. Most comics cannot be read out loud but some of these stories lend themselves to that ability.... This is a beautiful collection of fairy tales, written and told in the fashion of the "storyteller." This book warms my heart and is among one of my favorites.

excellent read
This used to be my favourite programme as a child. John Hurt was the perfect story teller and it is so sad that he is not with us anymore. the stories are absorbing and interesting. hard cover and the quality speaks for itself

Not as good as the giant stories
The first story is a fantasy which the art doesn't compliment. Words and pictures are hard to follow. The second story is an adaption of a Japanese fable. It seemed very familiar. I think I've read it before. One problem with it is that one page is misprinted. The word balloons are almost impossible to read. The third story is another fantasy story. Okay but there are no surprises in it at all. The final story is the best. A straight horror story it has good art and a decent if not totally original story. I admit I don't understand why the evil step mother and step sisters disappear in the light but they had to do something with them.

some stories resonated better with me than others
Absolutely gorgeous collection of art and stories here! As with the 'Dragons' edition of the Jim Henson's Storyteller series, some stories resonated better with me than others, but I found this collection to be overall more satisfying to my tastes, personally. A+ though, would recommend both books!
