You can fix your own water heater
if you're at all handy, you can fix your own water heater in most cases. For example, if it's not heating up or the pilot doesn't stay lit.In my case, the pilot wasn't staying lit. After many, many Google searches and Youtube videos I learned about this thing called a Thermocouple. The thermocouple is what keeps the pilot lit. After 10 or so years of use, it will burn down and need to be replaced. You do not need to replace an entire water heater if this happens. Save yourself money and preserve the landfill by repairing the hot water heater. If you're not comfortable doing it yourself...call a plumber.I read up and learned how to do this task. It's only about 30 minutes and involves 3 common tools. The big caveat is you have to be careful and willing to shut off the gas and disconnect a gas line (if you aren't comfortable with this..then call a plumber!). With Youtube video in hand, I turned off the gas into the water heater, unhooked 3 lines, unscrewed two screws and removed the burner assembly. While inside the water heater, I also vacuumed it out and made sure it was free of any ash or soot. This will help preserve the life of it. Next, I carefully removed the old thermocouple and fed in the new one. I put everything back together, turned back on the gas, and relit the pilot. I then carefully smelled for any signs of gas to make sure everything was good to go.It worked like a champ! The pilot now continues to stay lit and I have hot water when I need it. Total cost was under $10 vs. a new hot water heater at $1000+.

Wrong part for
I am not sure which water heater this thermocouple goes to but I can tell it doesn’t got to the State Select GS640YBRT. It requires the comple set minus burner plate. Cost right now on Amazon is roughly $61 dollars. But it is an easy enough part to replace. 3 wrenches and a Phillips screw driver and a little bit o knowledge. Yes 30 mins is a good calculation. The reason for the complete harness is the thermocouple has a resistor in line. Think it’s a resistor. For those of you who are thermocouple illiterate is in a nut shell a thermocouple has two dis-similar metals attached together. Amazingly enough they create a millivolt. This millivolt is used as a signal, (very common in all electronics today). With the right metals in the thermocouple the temps turn nob on your hot water heater is able to tell when the water reaches a certain temperature to either turn on to heat or turn off to stop heating. Bingo. At any rate thermocouples don’t last forever. In my case this only lasted about a year. As I have already replaced it once before. The real story here is make sure of what part your hot water heater uses.

It works!
Quick installation. Of course, check for compatibility with your water heater manufacturer/model. Had to get back in there the next day and adjust it to really stick that sensor bulb in the pilot flame. Haven't had any problems since installing (and making aforementioned adjustment) a couple of weeks ago. All in all, installation took about 30 minutes with only the benefit of watching someone do it on YouTube.
