Q: Is the “dry and activate” function the same as decarboxylating?

The Activate setting, yes. The Dry setting is recommended with herbs like Rosemary, Lavender and Thyme to reduce moisture before infusing, or storing for later use.

Q: Why such poor reviews but has almost 5 stars?

I don't know why poor reviews. I love my Levo II

Q: Aside from helping minimize decarb smell, what is the benefit to this machine over decarbing in oven and infusing via crockpot or other method??

Consistent temp is the hardest to maintain. Takes out the guess work. One stop shop to dry, activate, and infuse. Recipes seem inconsistent for time and temp but it’s a step up from trying to bake or Sous vide. Plus it looks really nice on the shelf. Those that know already know.

Q: Can it be used for alcohol based tinctures?

Solvents such as alcohol should not be used with electronic devices like LEVO for safety reasons. We recommend using MCT oil or vegetable glycerine to make tinctures with LEVO.
