how is this product secured to kerf?

The installer pushes the product into the kerf. There is no need for glue as the fit is very snug. It is a very easy project. As you remove the original weather stripping and replace it with the new, 'what goes where' becomes obvious. It only requires a bit of strength to butt the strip in evenly along the strip length.

How does this compare against the Q-lon weatherstripping? I have to replace some sections torn up by my cat but want to make sure it doesn’t look bad.

I’m really picky and I think it looks great- more important than the look is the super great seal that it provides around the door when the winter comes in. Just remember that you need a groove or a channel that goes around the frame of the door. The old one has to be pulled out of the door frame and this one pushed in which I do with soapy water.

Is there a special tool for cutting the kerf in older door frames?

I don’t know of such a tool. I suppose one could use a cutoff tool but it would be difficult to do.
