Ignore the bad reviews, this NAS is great! (even compared to other Buffalo NASs which I have)
Ignore the bad reviews, they either received a different drive (mine was beautiful, refurbed by Buffalo and looked and acted like it was brand new. I will also say that the drives, although, yes, 1TB each, are very high name brand quality) that I did or they have never worked with a NAS and they didn't want to read the manual. To be fair, being an ee/CD engineer for the last sixty years, I need to be very careful when I described some as "easy to use". I would suggest that anyone not familiar with NAS systems, Buffalo or otherwise, to first try and read the manual. If the manual uses terms you don't understand and/or the discussion seem "complicated", please do not buy this NAS (or any other). I have at least five different Buffalo NAS systems, of all sizes, and this 520 is, by far, the "easiest" to use. If you can't deal with this NAS, you can't deal with any. This is not your fault since the Buffalo programmers and hardware designers have no concept what a normal people knows and doesn't know about computers!Overall, this 520 series is not their most capable but has all functions that the typical user needs (plus a few more). I would buy another one of these in a heartbeat for a media server. As far as speed goes, this thing is as fast as my $1000 NAS systems. It can only be as fast as your network and the drives on each end. The review that said if was slow is wrong.

DO NOT BUY FROM THIS MANUFACTURER
Two months after purchasing this item, and the manufacturer has informed me that they will not honor any warranty for this item. They claim it is "liquidated stock", which, by the way IS PRECISELY WHAT ALL SOLD INVENTORY IS.They do not publish a phone number for support either. All I was trying to do is find out why their incomplete instructions don't match their system's software, so I cannot make it accessible from my phone, which the instructions claim I should be able to do .AGAIN, THIS MANUFACTURER IS A SCAM ARTIST, AND YOU SHOULD NOT PURCHASE FROM THEM.Zero stars are at least one too many for this.

This is awesome and easy... if you know some basics
This is a RAID server... which means a few things... you can either set it up as a mirror raid with 1TB total (as both drives have the same data written to them so if one fails, you have all your data) or as a 2TB combined drive system (and if you loose one drive, you are out of luck without a backup). File sharing for either Windows, Mac and Linux support. External Backup support. Web support (need a hard IP from your ISP). Can access data remotely from my iPhone. Takes about 20 minutes to setup for mirror array. Data access across the internal network is fast! Data access from remote site is limited to your speed at the office to the remote site. This is a wonderful device. Before you read the review about the whole 2TB oh my god crap... they know nothing... you are getting a full server with hot swappable hard drives included... need more space, get bigger drives and install in about 2 minutes. Geez. Check out the manufacture's web site and read a little before purchasing.Need a server for your office but a blade server is overkill because there is like 10 of you and your old server is dying... this is the system for you.

Ordered a 2 T and got a 1 T drive
I am not sure what happened but I paid for a 2 T unit on Amazon. Came quickly and was not too much trouble to install. But I now see that I only have 1 T of space. A bit much for such a small amout of space.

Deceptive Listing
Product came in a box stating Used-Like New, which wasn't in the description. Also, the listing states the warranty card and quick start guide are included, they were not.

Just What I Needed
Product arrived on time. This was well packaged, and no damage to the device was noted, product was in excellent condition. Regarding some of the reviews I have read regarding setup...I found the device's setup was straight-forward as depicted in the instructions. I set the device up for RAID 1 configuration w/no problems. Would definitely purchase again, and recommend. Buffalo's web page was easy to navigate and register the product. During my review of the product, it was a toss-up between Buffalo, and WD...but after discovering the NAS will only work w/WD drives and everything with WD is based off logging into their website for setup, etc. choosing Buffalo was my best option.

This device is not for me!
Without know how to do computer programming I am unable to use this external hard drive. It is so complicated! I wish I could return it. The device sat in the box, next to my computer for months. When I finally found the time to install it, I was lost. Nothing is wrong with the device, this device is certainly not for me.

It’s not Awesome
Whoever says this is an awesome product has no idea what awesome is. If awesome means less than 10MB/second read and write then this is perfect for you. This is the worst product I have ever purchased. I do not even use it anymore and I wish I had never purchased it. If there is a USB port on your router then all you need to do is plug a USB hard drive into it and you will be 100 times better off. If your router does not have a USB port then maybe it’s time for an upgrade. I honestly thought it was the router I had that was causing the problem so I spent even more money on upgrading that too. I am surprised this company is still in business. I guarantee they do not get repeated business. The reviews that say it’s awesome have to be fake but some people in this enjoy pain and suffering. I might regret purchasing this NAS but I went through the pain and the headache’s so you do not have to. I hope you find the solution you are looking for unfortunately it’s not this NAS
