can you slide puzzle off?

Not easily. It has “rim” around the edges - which is super handy when you are assembling the puzzle. You would need to slip a flat baking sheet or something similar to get a puzzle off intact. All in all I have found this to be a good value and enjoy using it. I did add some picture frame clips to the frame so that I can use the cover when I need to move an in- progress puzzle. I also added a strip of wood to the top to allow for using a clip on light. Two simple and cheap alterations that really make this nice.

Will this fit a standard 1000 puzzle, size 26.75 x 19.75 inches?

I just did one that exact size and yes it will.

Can this be used on a 28 inch square card table?

It could if the table is sturdy and doesn't wobble. It might not leave much room for spreading out the pieces you are searching for. I use disposable paper bowls or plates for the pieces.
