Q: will it work on wooden director's chair arms?

The arms of a director's chair would probably be too narrow to use straight from the package. My husband's desk chair has narrow arms and the pad slid around a bit; he got around this by using large black binder clips to hold the straps tightly together.

Q: Stop shifting when pulled super tight and fastened?

I have them fastened over the narrow glossy finished wooden arms of a rocking chair and no matter how tight the straps are drawn, they shift.

Q: Would these work on airline arm rests in economy section?

I don’t know it the straps would fit around the seats I don’t fly much. But I like the pads. They work for us we use on patio furniture and offices chair
