Q: Silly question - where does the water come from it uses to wash?

There is a"T" attachment and hose that comes with the appliance. Hooks up to your regular water supply.

Q: Can you put this on the left side

No. The main reason is that most toilet tanks have water supply on the right side as you sit (left side as you look at the commode).

The shape of the seat or toilet doesn't matter. It fits between the toilet seat and toilet.
