Using a centuries-old French crock method, Butter Bay keeps butter soft and spreadable anytime, without refrigeration. A cube of butter fits perfectly inside, and Butter Bay's air-tight water seal maintains butter's fresh flavor for weeks. Just add 1/4 - 1/3 cup cold water to the basin (and change the water every 3 - 4 days) to keep butter soft and spreadable. Each Butter Bay is made using the slip-cast method, finished by hand, and kiln-fired in a factory that was built 114 years ago.

White edging rough and unfinished with a sharp edge, not chipped, but like it was mis-made
I have updated and upgraded my review based on contact with the vendor after I left my first review. I did return the first butter bay, but was sent a second one. The second one is well made without the nick on top. I learned about the unglazed top being how they are all made, and that this butter keeper actually holds a stick of butter (1/2 cup) which is the norm. Even though the butter holding part looked small, sure enough, it easily held the stick of butter.Jim and I have a little quibble on our favorite. I actually find this butter bay the one I like best, I like the elongated handle and I find it easier to get the butter out of the oval shape. Jim likes the other one we tried better, a more straight up and down design. Our solution, keep and use both:) we both agree this is the more attractive of the two.I appreciate the manufacturers caring enough to reach out, however, I have to deduct a star because the first one I had did have issues. However, this one is lovely and works great, and is well made.*original review follows: ................Maybe I got a lemon, since most of the reviews are positive. In my case, while I love the idea and the color, the butter holding portion seems tiny. (although I'm told it's a stick of butter which is the norm for these butter holders.) Also, the white unfinished top is odd looking because the paint is uneven on the side, and the white part is rough. It also has a sharp edge like it was miscast, and gave me a good snag on my finger. I asked Jim if he could file it down, but we decided to just return it instead. The color is a gorgeous rich pomegranate. It's truly a shame it didn't work because it's mostly beautiful.

An Excellent Product AND Made In The USA!
I've been using my Butter Bay now for about two weeks and am absolutely thrilled with how it works. When I first discovered the item on Amazon.com I searched the internet for the company's page and was led to thebutterbay.com. The page is packed with lots of information about the company and their product and the customer service is quite good. I sent an email with some questions not addressed by the web site and received a very friendly reply in good time. After I received my Butter Bay from Amazon I went back to the company web site to watch the video demonstrating its use (about 2 1/2 minutes) and was thoroughly impressed that the product really is as simple and mess free to "load" as the video demonstrates! I would surely recommend the Butter Bay to anyone who inquired.A few of the facts that have made me so happy with this product follow:1. The product is produced entirely in the United States.2. It is constructed well and feels substantial in your hand. It doesn't feel fragile.3. It will accommodate a variety of sizes of butter sticks very simply.4. It can be filled as simply and cleanly as indicated on the company's video.5. It is available in a nice selection of colors and at a price that surpasses other similar products. It is also very handsome and not decorated with any motifs.6. It really does work.7. It is very easy to clean and maintain.8. The products footprint is not substantially larger than a stick of butter so it's a great product for those of us with small or tiny kitchens.A few things that I discovered after my email to the company and their reply to me:1. If you're adding salt to the water use about 1/8 t.2. Cool tap water is recommended.

If you like Butter, give this a try!
This is one of those products that you didn't know you needed until you have one. I saw one on one of those "shop at home" networks and thought it was pretty ingenious but could never find one in any stores. I looked on Amazon and there were several different types of butter keepers and I am very glad that I went with this one. Why? First of all, I didn't realize that there are two different sizes of butter in the U.S. Apparently in the east butter sticks are long and skinny and in the west they are short and fat. The sticks of butter that I purchase are all long and thin. Why do I bring this up? Well, the best part of this dish is that the sticks of butter fit in this dish straight out of the wrapper - if you have the short, fat sticks like they do in the west. If you go on the Butter Bay website they have a quick remedy for all of us with the "eastern" butter - cut off a little on each end and put it on the top of the stick of butter and - Voila! This process takes all of about five seconds. Comparable butter keepers do not have this shape and you will have to spoon the butter into the slot. The Butter Bay is very well made and it seals up nice. I put a little water in the bottom and make sure to change it every few days and we haven't had any problems. The butter stays where it is supposed to and we haven't had any problems with it falling into the water. What else can I say? The color of this product was just what I expected. Overall, we are very happy with this product. If you like butter, try this one out!

American Made
I have kept my butter in the cupboard in a covered butter dish for many years. I was at a friend's house and she had a butter bell which I had never seen. She told me that it was a good way to keep the butter fresh without refrigeration. I had just broken my butter dish so I decided to give this a try. It's pricey, but I bought it because it fit better in my space than the round butter bell which is much wider. I didn't like it as much as my inexpensive glass covered butter dish, which I subsequently replaced with a similar one. I didn't think it was necessary for me to have one in which I had to change the water every few days; I didn't like having to pack the butter in the top; one time it fell into the water because I hadn't packed it hard enough. HOWEVER, I have a home in Arizona and even with the a/c on, the butter left in the cupboard sometimes gets a little too soft. So I'm taking it there and I think this butter keeper will work very well. It's a good product and if you need the shape, then you have to pay the higher price. If not, butter keepers are available for a lot less...but this is American made and that's a plus.
