The New Approach to Uillean Piping
If you are trying to learn Uilleann Pipes without a tutor buy this book! I purchased a Uilleann practice set and discover the book that came with it was not a great help. This book with the CD included will help you learn the Uilleann pipes. The CD is narrated in a clear voice and uses good English without slang so it can be understood by those who speak American English. The musical instrument played in the lessons are a practice set without drones so you will be able to better compare your notes to theirs. The lesson structure will have you learning finger placement to achieve notes on the chanter and teach you how to read music as well. Note combinations are introduced to you in print and sound to show you how to get from one note to another and then tunes are played in their entirety so you can play along as you learn at you own pace.

Must have for beginning pipers
This book is an excellent reference for beginning pipers. If you do not have a teacher (as it is difficult to find Uilleann pipers in some areas) this book is absolutely essential. I starts with the basics of just making noise on the pipes, which is an undertaking in itself, and then proceeds to introduce the piper to a variety of tunes beginning with very simple ones and moving up in complexity. Seeing as you're buying a how to book I'm assuming that you are a beginning piper. A word on actual pipes, stay away from the Pakistani ones. If you are on a budget I would recommend buying a practice set from David Daye [...] as his pipes are both affordable and high quality.

Great book and CD
Great book and CD. It is very simple to understand and the CD gives you an opportunity to hear what she is teaching. I would recommend this to anyone wanting to learn the Uilleann Pipes. However, keep in mind that a personal instructor is always better than not. Good luck and happy piping.

Fabulous!
This book, and accompanying CD really moves along. You will stop and review regularly as it goes that quick. It's perfect for any level of piper. The beginner should not start without it, and the advanced player can still learn a lot from it. Really!

Great for beginners
I studied engineering in my undergrad so I think with that part of my brain. I've never played a musical instrument, couldn't carry a note in a bucket. After a couple of days studying Mr Clarke's great tutorial, I was both reading music and happily murdering notes on my cheap set of Pakistani pipes. The CD included was of great help tuning my pipes as was the freeware tuning program I downloaded off the net, AP tuner ([...]). If a musically clueless git like me can learn, anyone can. Definately worth the price.

H J Clarke book
I think that this is an excellent book for beginners. The info inside gives a great overview and the step by step approach is a great way to learn a new instrument. It also does a good job of teaching one how to read music. It's good for beginners to music as well those more advanced.

Excellent resource
An extremely well written and easy to understand book. Especially helpful for someone who has experience playing the Great Highland Bagpipe. Lessons are well spaced and I find I can proceed in a deliberate manner, improving with each lesson.

Very good tutor to start from the early beginning
The tutor shows how to hold and make the instrument work as well as the main fingering very progressively.I only regret that the final collection of famous tunes has not been registered on the CD

Excellent tutorial. More importantly care for the instrument!
I did some research into the books available for the Uilleann pipes & for me this seemedto tick all the boxesOn arrival & a subsequent flick through the book, I have to say the contents were perfect for what I requiredBest bit for me was the explanation on the maintenance of the pipes. It actually gives the learner the knowledge of how the instrument really works.Worth every penny this one.Haven't used the CD yet but if its half as good as the book, it'll be superb too

The pipes, the pipes are calling!
To the despair of my next door neighbour this book has really helped to start me on my journey. It is excellent and could not be bettered. From the origins, construction and history and to every necessary requirement to master the instrument, it’s all there. Honestly, if you are determined to learn this amazing instrument then you can’t fail if you follow this book. There is nothing to beat it on the market.

The best Uilleann pipingtutor book
This is easily the best tutor for the pipes i have come across. I have the Davy Spillane as well which is awful and doesn't contain anything you would expect to find in tutor only tunes. This book covers, notes on the chanter, the different finger positions for each note, ornamentation, playing styles, problem solving, rudiments of music and lots of tunes. Very very good!!The only reason I haven't given it 5 stars is because the playing on the CD is to fast! I have found even with the very basic exercises i had to learn them first before i could play along but that isn't a massive problem and it has made me work a little harder.I have "the art of Uilleann piping" DVD and using both together has given me the best results as they cover the same ground but the DVD allows you to see the finger positions thus making it easier to understand and would recommend you go to the NPU website to buy these. All in all a must for any beginner.
