does the swivel only turn partially or spin in a circular motion?

It does not spin. You can go up and down (like on a carrot) when peeling making it very fast.

I need a vegetable peeler that is very strong. I want to be able to peel hard squashes. What pillar do you recommend that won't break.

I recently bought the Gorilla Swival Peeler and I love it. I think it would easily peel squash. I have no problem with sweet potatoes.
