High hopes but disappointed
I have read and viewed reviews on the Jinhao 9056 and many were favorable, claiming Jinhao upped their quality game on this pen. I have many Jinhao pens, and many different species of them. I purchased this pen in the walnut finish. It arrived in a presentation box — highly unusual for a Jinhao product. Taking a closer look, the box itself had quality control issues. The inside of the lid, white in color, had five oily spots, small in size but rather dark in color. Very unattractive. The manual, again unusual for Jinhao, was printed an attractive orange color that matched the outside box color — except where it didn’t. There was a white rectangle left unpainted on the cover page, sticking out like a sore thumb. For presentation purposes, these defects would disappoint the recipient and embarrass the giver. If you’re just going to toss the box, you won’t care anyway. On to the pen itself. The wood barrel, whether it is actually walnut is questionable, had a rough finish near the top of it, that looked scuffed and was rough to the touch. At the bottom of the barrel there was a chip in the wood that looked ugly. I have two wooden Jinhao 51a pens that cost $8 each and their finish is very well done, and free of the defects found in my 9056. The spring required a lot of force to open it. The nib has an attractive dual tone, and is marked F. I didn’t ink the pen, as I returned it, but a dry test of the nib suggested it would be quite scratchy. Hand feel is much like my Jinhao 159s. It’s chunky, it’s hefty. Some of us like that. This is the most, by far, I ever paid for a Jinhao pen. It’s one of the worst in terms of finish. It is not worth the price at all. I returned it immediately, unused. I am fond of my much cheaper four 51a and four Jinhao 159 pens, which are great values.

Smooth finish and good writer
I like pens, but I'm not a collector, so when I say this is a good pen, I'm not comparing it to those high price pens that you never dare to use. This pen has a nice smooth finish barrel with a subtle wood scent which I like. The logo is engraved on the cap, so there's no loud branding. Of course, when you touch the engraving with your finger tip, it feels rougher than the rest part. The spring clip is one of the reasons I chose this pen over some other wood pens because it makes getting the pen in and out of the pen case easier.I tested it with Jinhao ink cartridge on my Stalogy journal. It writes both English and Chinese smoothly. No bleeding or ghosting. Writing Chinese requires different features from a pen than writing western letters. That's why many pens that reported to be smooth for writing English fail miserably if they are used to write Chinese. If you encountered a "scratchy" pen, check who the primary target audience are. I ordered F nib, and it makes a slightly thicker line than my Pilot F nib, which is expected. However, I haven't experienced any roughness or scratchiness as some reviews said. But again, I'm not a collector. I may not know how a real good pen writes.I have small hands, so small that I can use Kaweco Sport without posting, but I don't find this pen uncomfortable to hold. As you can see in the pictures, the black plastic part (where your hand goes) is thinner than the wood barrel. It comes in a nice box which makes it giftable. If I want to be really picky, I would say the F mark on the nib could be smaller for aesthetic reason.Overall this is a very nice pen that fits the budget. I have no complaint. Looking forward to seeing how the wood color changes over time.

Okay pen - no customer service
I purchased this pen as an addition to my fountain pen collection. I like wood and this seemed like a great value. The description states: "SATISFACTION SERVICE - If any troubles with our fountain pens, please do not hesitate to contact us for a replacement or refund. We will try our best to solve the problem for you."It arrived well packaged. I inserted one of my quality international size cartridges that I use in my other pens. I had a very hard time getting the ink to start flowing. When it did, it came out much too heavy. There was no contact information in the packaging for Jinhao. I contacted the seller and they said sorry, return to Amazon.I have not yet returned the pen - it was not that expensive and I'm trying to get used to it. I would have liked to receive a new nib as I like the wood and the feel. In the future, I would not purchase any Jinhao products as there simply is no service after purchase.

As expected, but faster arrival.
Anyone familiar with Jinhao fountain pens will recognize the tip that comes on this pen. It isn't terrible, but there are better tips out there. Still, the price point makes this pen well worth it. It is almost as thick as the 159 and noticeably lighter without being too light for those who like pens with some heft. I like the patina of the real wood and look forward to watching it change over time with more use. I like a thick pen that has some weight to it and works well with the cap posted. This pen checks all of those boxes. I wish Jinhao had smoother tips, but it is what it is at this price point. At least it isn't scratchy to the point of tearing paper.

Another Jinhao Winner
I have come to love Jinhao fountain pens, and this 9056 model is no exception. I was not certain if I would like a wooden finish but have really enjoyed this one. It is large and similar in size to the Jinhao 159 which I have also enjoyed. When I first wrote with it, it was a bit dry. I opened the tines a bit and now this is one of my best writers. You cannot beat the value this pen provides for the price!
