Okuma Tundra Durable Glass Surf Spinning Rods

Liked the Packaging...came well protected with lots of Brown paper. One minor Nick on the top pole. Feels good on the hands. Got this one for Surf Fishing. Where I live the Waves are high, so I have to cast Far. Got the 13'. Will have to wait for rain to pass, then I'll post performance critique. But, for now I love it. The bottom Guide Folds down...a bit stiff at first. I see why the Apoxide Cracked. Put Zip ties on each end. This will give you added protection from Guide coming off. Folding down the Guide is a bit Stiff, causing apoxide to Crack.UPDATE...Love it. Went Surf Fishing. Man can this 13 footer cast. Long cast...using Braid. No issues with the Rod, out performed more expensive Rods. You will get a workout. Update...Got the Ten Footer. It's beautiful. Not a Scratch. Surprisingly Flawless, No packaging just a plastic bag. Will put it to work this Weekend.

Bought this for my recent beach trip after my previous pole lost a few eyelets. This held up amazing to hundreds of casts and fish. The rod is way thicker than I imagined, but that’s what you get with fiberglass. Nontheless a fantastic rod for the price.

Sometimes you just find yourself needing more fishing gear.. Fishing is like model railroading or flying, or skydiving, your always finding something new and cool to have.. That said - I have two of these 15' beast.. I can fish salt water or fresh water with ease, and reel any whatever I am sure. My passion for fishing often finds me chasing large blue catfish and channel cats.. AND they work spot on! The tip as not a fast action but you can see bite when tight lining or even bumping or trolling; The sheer size draws everyone's eyes in most fresh water locals.. The artic white glows with a sliver of moon light, and takes nothing much in terms of a bank light to see rod tip movement..You can really launch some impressive baits when you have a large rig setup, and big fish go for big baits..But you can also toss line an hooks for snagging as well.. But what I also like, is being able to even cast lures too- sounds crazy but this company makes amazing stuff.. And I will be buying more even in smaller sizes for other fishing.. Fine craftsmanship, outstanding performance, and the 15' breaks down easy into 3 easy to store an go sections. So to close.. Would I tell a friend, I have.. would I gift one sure, I do plan to buy more! Is it worth it.. Buy it - try it - and fall in love with it!

Pros:- 3 piece construction allows for relatively easy transport.- Fiberglass allows for a decent level of sensitivity and excellent strength at a low cost.- It's held up slinging up to 8 oz and bait with distance casting tackle.- Inexpensive, so you don't pull your hair when it snaps, unlike the fear I have with my Century rods.- The white color does allow you to detect bites from a reasonable distance, even in low light conditions.- Excellent back up bait soaker rod while you go after other fish.Cons- The grip - The lower grip, although in a split grip format, is a tad short for the rod length. Casting is quite a chore since it's a tad unbalanced.- Fiberglass construction leads to a significant amount of weight, and given it's a 15 foot rod, you're looking at an extremely hefty rod.- At 15 feet, the rod will act as a lever AGAINST you while fighting fish, and therefore give you a slight, nay, CONSIDERABLE disadvantage.- The rod's action, although sufficient, is not the most ideal one for outright distance.- Unless you're Andre the Giant, good luck using it for lures.- The folding main guide can be a tad tricky to operate. I wanted to see how well a 15 foot fiberglass rod would perform and found this little gem on Amazon for a pretty great price. You will not see fancy wrapping, nor will you see the best of finishes - rather, you are purchasing a rod that is very no-frills in looks. In addition, the use of fiberglass allows for a solid rod blank with acceptable sensitivity at the cost of increased weight and a less than favorable action for surf fishing. As a result of this, the distances you will achieve is not necessarily the furthest. Another point worth considering is the weight - it's a 15 foot rod made of fiberglass and has a MASSIVE butt section that literally was wide enough to slide another of my rods into. Due to the inadequate spacing between the upper grip where the reel sits and the lower grip, you will have some difficulty casting this rod properly. And of course, it will wear you down considerably from the mere act of casting this behemoth of a rod. This certainly limits the roles that this rod can assume, because you will NOT want to use the rod for lures - unless you really, really want a upper body workout, then by all means cancel the gym membership and enjoy your 10 or so casts before you keel over from exhaustion. Speaking of exhaustion, while you're fighting a fish, the longer length of this rod acts as a lever, so the power that a fish can exert on you while it makes a run can very easily tire you out. I had some difficulty with the one shark I caught and had to rest for a while after that fight. All in all, for 35 bucks plus shipping, you are getting a massive rod that can fold into three pieces, cast a decent distance if need be, and handle pretty decent sized sinkers. I've used this rod primarily as a bait soaker rod while I worked the surf for other species with my lighter rods. And so far, it's accounted for 7 10-25lb drum, 2 small stingrays, 1 3-foot blacktip shark, 4 bonnetheads, 23 various catfish at the lakes, and an eel, of all things.In conclusion, if you know what you're getting into and you keep in mind the dirt cheap price tag, you're receiving a pretty decent rod whose build quality isn't terrible and gets the job done.

Great product

I don't often write reviews whether or positive or negative, but felt it important to write this one due to the awful customer service of the manufacturer. I bought the 12ft version of this pole less than 2 months ago. I have only used it 4 times. The largest eyelet (guide) closest to the reel completely broke apart into pieces, and there is rust on some of the others. It was kept safe and never dropped. It simply fell apart. Look, I understand that this is a cheaper rod. However, I expected Okuma to stand behind their product and make good on it. The only way they were going to replace my rod, was if I cut a section of the rod out, and sent it back to them, to Canada, at MY expense. Then they would mail me a new one. I said that was ridiculous for me to have to pay to mail a section internationally out of my pocket. I even offered to cut it up and take pics to email them to prove that I was not trying to keep 2 rods. They said no. I also felt that I shouldn't have to wait that long to get the replacement. I said to send me a new one with a return packing label and I would put the old one in the box and send it back. They said no. They tried to tell me that they were doing me a favor because normally it would be $15 for shipping! REALLY? FOR YOUR DEFECTIVE PRODUCT? Clearly this happens often if they will not stand behind their product and need to charge unfortunate customers who receive faulty equipment. Buyer Beware. No rod should rust and fall apart that quickly. I have Walmart poles for years that are still functioning. Just thought I would share and warn future purchasers.

Light weight for the size and the fact it's all fiberglass!Easily throws 6oz weight.Also throws 4 oz weight very well. Good loading at this weight.I haven't tried 2oz weight yet.Very nice that it folds into 3 pieces about 53-1/2 inches each.Sturdy reel mount.

Here on the Miramichi during early fall the stripers are moving back in to feed....some stay the winter under the ice. There are a higher percentage of large, mature fish in the system and they mostly take bait as opposed to lures. So chunking is the norm and long casts are an advantage. I looked for about two months for a good surf rod and decided on the Okuma Tundra and I haven't been disappointed. This rod will cast a mile with 3 and 4 ounce weights. It's light and has a sensitive tip. Anyone who thinks the butt is too long obviously doesn't know how to cast a surf rod. The length of the fighting butt is perfect for getting that pendulum action to gain momentum for that long cast. I've already landed several nice stripers just today. An amazing rod for an amazing price.
