Super Cool Product
I've been looking for a more affordable pastel surface to draw on. I love drawing on paper, but the prices are a bit high for me nowadays. Enter Golden Pastel Ground. Seriously, this stuff is a game changer. I applied 2 coats, thinned with water and tinted dark gray to a miniature canvas and tested a few different drawing mediums on it (see photo). I'm very impressed. The texture is great, but not so toothy that it eats through pastels and colored pencils. I'm most impressed with how little of the primer shows though each type of medium, without even applying that much material to the canvas. Also, because you thin it down, there are several levels of grittiness to be achieved, and the jar will definitely last a while. I'll definitely be buying more. And as an added bonus, the jar was shipped in a box and not one of those horrible plastic bags. 🙌

Company said it works on canvases...but it does NOT work for Canvases.
I put two coats each on six canvases...( the whole container)and it was way too rough - will eat my paste;s - even though I'm now trying to sand down the canvases...it's not working very well.It creates a hatchmark pattern with the gesso under the pastel. I think the other reviewer is right it's not enough pumice to create an even surface so the gesso is creating streaks.Cheaper to just by pumice and add it to paint or to gesso and do it myself or try the liquitex method.

A professional pastel artist suggested buying this to turn any paper into pastel paper. Works so good! You do have to dilute some with water but easy to do. I tried this on cardstock but that paper wasn't strong enough. I tried it on Strathmore pastel paper but not quite strong enough to hold up to water. Works perfect on Canson Mi-Teintes pastel.
