Cute gadget with many features - and design deficiencies
I got this Block 5.0 Wireless Speaker from a discount outlet for far less than the price listed here. It seems to be a neat gadget with many features I like:- Bluetooth mode to wirelessly connect with my phone or tablet for playing music- Answer phone calls with built-in microphone- FM radio mode- AUX input mode for direct connection to my MP3 player- Rechargeable batteryAfter spending some time to examine the product, however, I noticed many design deficiencies:- From the product photo, it looks like the whole front side is occupied by either one large oval speaker, or two smaller round speakers. In reality there is just one tiny (1-inch diameter) speaker on the left side. The rest of the 'Speaker grill' is for show only.- The music produced by this tiny speaker sounds tinny with no bass. But at least it is better than that from any cell phone.- At power up, the speaker announces "Power on" and "Bluetooth Mode", etc. This sounds like a cool feature for the first few times, but it soon becomes an annoyance since the announcement is really LOUD.- The unit always wakes up at the maximum volume instead of its previous level. So the first thing I have to do is quickly turn down the volume before the music starts blasting.- There are five push-buttons on top of the unit. The markings on those buttons are cryptic and hardly legible.- There are no dedicated Volume-Up/Down buttons. Instead, they are shared with Previous/Next Track buttons. You have to press and hold the buttons, then wait for the volume to change. This makes fine adjustment very difficult. Incidentally, the button marked with an UP arrow makes the volume go DOWN, while the one with a DOWN arrow makes the volume go UP. How intuitive is that?- When using AUX input in the back, the signal sensitivity is too low. With my Philips GoGEAR Ariaz MP3 Player , for example, I have to crank its output volume to maximum, but the sound from this speaker is still too soft.- A 'Y-cable' is included, which shares the audio coaxial plug (for AUX input) with the USB-to-microUSB charging cable. That means I can recharge the internal battery when using AUX mode. However, I noticed a ticking sound coming from the speaker when doing this. Apparently there is interference between charging current and audio signal. Some other (more positive) notes:- Pairing is very easy with both my phone (Samsung Galaxy S3) and tablet ( Lenovo IdeaTab A8-50 )- The Bluetooth range is acceptable. When using my Lenovo tablet as source, the speaker can be up to ~70 ft away within line-of-sight. When using my Samsung Glaxy S3, the range is reduced but still around 50 ft.- The unit is splash-resistant but not water-proof. That means it can survive a few rain drops, but obviously not in your swimming pool.[Bottom Line]There are just too many design deficiencies in this cheaply-made wireless speaker. At the heavily discounted price I paid (1/3 MSRP) it could be considered an 'Okay' value at best. I definitely cannot recommend getting it at the full MSRP Amazon has it listed for.
