NFHK NGFF B/M-Key SSD to 2.5 inch IDE 44Pin Hard Disk Case Enclosure for Notebook Laptop

So I wanted to write something to attempt to educate some people and comment about the negative reviews on this device claiming it doesn't work. Usually when people are using this device to put a mSATA SSD into an older laptop the thing that they aren't thinking about is the capacity limitations of the BIOS of the older machines. I just bought this and I tried to use it in an older 2006 HP Tablet Laptop (Model Compaq TC 4200). It does work perfectly fine but I did some testing. Using a 64GB mSATA SSD works 100%. Using even a 128GB one works 100%. And even a 256GB mSATA works 100% too. But that's as far as this laptop can go. I tried using a 500 GB mSATA Drive and put it in the laptop and it acted as if there was no hard drive at all / did not even detect it. So the people claiming this device doesn't work are likely trying to use a 500GB or higher capacity mSATA drive in their old EIDE/IDE/PATA laptops and the laptops just don't support drives that big. Back before SATA came out there were never any older laptop hard drives in EIDE/IDE/PATA format that were at 500GB or higher capacity. It never existed so most older laptops are not going to support that via this device. There is nothing wrong with this device and it works perfectly fine. As long as we use a properly sized SSD with a capacity that is compatible with the older machines.

This let me install an SSD into a Windows XP laptop. Does not get cooler than that. Thank you so much.

I've ordered several of these adapters and so far all have functioned. But they are not without problems. The plastic top case is oversized compared to a spinning hard drive and in some cases this can be an issue with installing this adapter into the laptop's drive caddy. A second issue is that the opening for the connector can be too small with some caddy mating connector. The first issue, of being oversized, may require sanding or filing the plastic to reduce the size. While the later issue (above) requires cutting a larger opening so the connectors mates correctly. This said, if you need a 2.5" PATA IDE hard drive to make an old laptop function there isn't much chance of finding NOS spinning PATA IDE hard drive in 2025. Or not at a reasonable price. Many old laptops have BIOS limits of 32GB and a SSD of this size is cheap these days, while buying a used spinning disk hard drive may not last or may have bad data sectors. Larger SSD's are also reasonable in price and can be much faster than old hard drives with little cache memory built-in. The real limitation in speed is the IDE interface design and not something that a cheap SSD will limit.

Tried using this with a 120gb msata in my old, XP based, Dell c840. It would not recognize a drive. Ordered a 2nd one and tried with a 64gb drive, same result.Following another reviewers lead, I then ordered the aluminum umbrella Ablecom. Put the same 120gb msata in there and she booted right up. I've used this on several old PPC based Macs with great success. Boot up time on a Mac Mini G4 was cut to a fraction of what it was with the spinning HDD. You will not get full SATA speeds, of course, but this has no issue maxing out the IDE bus. Build quality is good and it was much cheaper than buying an IDE SSD. If the storage goes bad I can easily swap in another card. Great little adapter!

This will accept an NGFF SSD from a hard to find HD to a laptop IDE to a SATA drive.

Actual drive thickness is somewhat more than 9.5mm, making it not fit as a replacement for some 9.5mm IDE laptop hard drives.Exposed pins from IDE connector are covered with fabric tape, which on my example was clearly punctured. To safely install, you may need to apply higher quality insulating tape on the IDE connector bottom. This likely will make the drive even less likely to fit a tight space.
