Q: Whats the difference with the hrm-tri?

The pro and tri both store all the same information. The Tri is much more water proof. They both use Ant+ and Bluetooth. I use the tri during my 70.3, but lets be honest here, no real swimmers actually uses a heartrate monitor during practice. In college and elite level swimming, no one uses one. My Tri connects to my Rouvy app and my Cyclops bike trainer using bluetooth. I had a Pro but it stopped working after about a year, even with a battery change. My Tri has worked for over 3 years now with 1 battery change. Just make sure you have the o-ring seated correctly when you replace the battery. As a runner or cyclist, the Pro works just fine.

Q: Can i connect this directly to my garmin connect app on my phone or will i need a garmin device like a watch?

I had problems attempting to connect this heart strap to my Garmin Connect App on my Samsung S10e phone. Thus far the connection is spotty.
