Q: Is this effective as a squirel guard?

It's not as big, or covers a feeder as much as a regular squirrel guard, but it might help as a deterrent. I use mine more for keeping my hummingbird feeders shaded, cool, and away from ants. Also, offering some feeder protection from rain.

These hooks are seven and one half inches top to bottom .

Yes , there is a hook underneath to hold the feeder---this is a very nice cover and attractive.
