This is a most excellent recipe book
This is a most excellent recipe book. Very healthful and mostly inexpensive ingredients and so easy and quick to put together. This is changing the way I plan much of the weeks menus. I cannot say enough good about this recipe book. I am planning on getting it for a number of friends and family members.

Health food? traditional food? quick food? I can't identify the intended audience.
Perhaps my expectations were wrong, but I found this book to be a disappointment. The author was clearly unaware of the Asian tradition of rice and tea although she uses it effectively. She makes bibimbap without egg or hot sauce, pho without noodles, taco bowls without tortillas leaving me puzzled as to what she considers essential traits of a dish. Traditions such as the poke bowl or donburi are missing. She is heavily into the use of ingredients currently popular as nutritional powerhouses - hemp seed, kombucha, goji berries - and while I tried no recipes in which they harmed the final product, they did not necessarily enhance it. To me, each ingredient needs to serve a purpose in the dish. Component elements such as pickled beets are never given a recipe. And finally, the ratio of vegetable/fruit to protein to complex fiber to healthy fats was frequently outside my expectations. On the positive side the author provides an extensive list of available grains along with directions for heating, freezing and reheating. For beans, nuts/seeds, proteins, and dairy there are a few representative items. These tables also provide the information for a rough estimate of calories for dieters or carbohydrates for diabetics. The intent of the author is that the cook will mix and match elements of the recipes - something that works well but could easily have been made clearer in the recipes by separating the elements of the bowl. The author provides examples both covering a range of ethnic flavors and eating restrictions - and she does so without using ingredients requiring access to anything beyond a medium sized supermarket.I wouldn't recommend this as an introduction to bowl meals but it is a useful addition to a collection of them. For an initial book, I would suggest the forthcoming Nourish Bowls: Simple and Nutritious Balanced Meals in a Bowl .

Was looking for something more practical.
This is a great book for real foodies. I was looking for something more practical with items already in my kitchen. I'm not a novice cook. Most of the recipes are just a little more exotic than I would cook every day.

This is a really good cookbook. Considering that everything is served in a bowl I had wondered how diverse it would be. It is quite diverse. The recipes are inexpensive, easy, and satisfying. I would definitely recommend this book

I have already made several of these and plan several more in the immediate future. Delicious, simple to prepare and all ingredients readily available at my grocery store. One trip to World Market filled in the very few gaps. My family loves them and they are quite satisfying and nutritious.

There are only a few recipes that I would make, and a lot of the dishes have ingredients that I don't know what they are or where to get them. I do like that she gives you suggestions on how to make your own creations.
