The roof does not open, but I installed $5 hinges on the back to open it. Easy to do. I use it as a chicken coop & need to open to get eggs.

Yes, I painted it with my outside door paint that I already had. The wood is barely stained, and does not have a sealer on it, so there was no problem getting the dog house to soak up the paint. It really needs a coat of outside paint to keep it from deteriorating over time.

Can this be assembled with the door on the right?

No, all the pieces fot together like a puzzle on the inside.

Will the medium be big/sturdy enough for a 55 lb rambunctious husky?

I would say that in colder weather, this house would accommodate a 55 lb. dog as the smaller space will help conserve heat.
