I had really wanted to make this piece for a while, namely because I suspected making a wooden chair with this shape would prove to be a challenge. To my knowledge, there isn't a chair out there of similar construction; the closest cousin Ch-Air has is a chair made by Gerrit Rietveld. Besides the challenge, I wanted a piece that would embody the concept of consistence, and I wanted emphasize negative space to make my small room feel roomier. To achieve "consistence," I knew I wanted to make it such that the grain flowed from top to bottom, just like how it does on the lumber, creating the feeling that the board had just been bent to shape. While this can be achieved via steam bending, you'll be dealing with soft curves and my aesthetic leans towards sharp angles and strong geometric shapes. The desire for maximizing negative space and creating a roomier room also dictated the chair's shape. Being a chair, it had to be comfortable (Duh!). I didn't want a bunch of 90 degree angles that my body was going to be contorted into, hence why the seat is angled downwards and the back backwards a few degrees. But some of you are probably saying... "Hm, okay, but I question its structural integrity." So did I and it is why initially I had no plans to sell it. It was a one-of-a-kind piece, made just for me. Then after I finished making it, I couldn't believe how strong it was. No exaggeration, I can put my full body weight on the back of the chair (that's 160 or so pounds) and it won't flex a farthing of an inch. This is exactly where you have the best leverage. So let's cover some basic specs... Chair is 14" wide This particular piece is in walnut Chair leg is about 19" high Finished with multiple coats of tung oil You like this but want something different?
