So i've been dabbling with watercolors and decided it's time to buy some better watercolors. should i go with these or winsor and newton cotmans?

For me, personally, I prefer the Mijello Mission Gold class watercolor paints to the Windsor Newton Cotman watercolors. The “contest” between the two isn’t even fair, IMO. As another person pointed out, the WNC are student grade paints, and the MMGC paints, particularly their mono pigment line, are generally regarded as professional artist grade.

Can anyone compare these with Dan Smith & Schmincke for quality?

Each brand of professional artist grade paints are exquisite in their own way. Daniel Smith paints are really fun, innovative, and pigment packed. IMO, the Daniel Smith line is the most beginner friendly, in that they offer essential mixing sets at reasonable prices, and their whole philosophy seems to be about offering great products in a way that teaches people about color theory and blending colors like no other line I’ve seen, in a very understated, non obvious way by rewarding the curious innovator with color “Easter eggs”. I’ve always wondered if the folks at Daniel Smith had been teachers in a previous life, because I find that I’m thinking and exploring more with this line in a sometimes unconventional way. The Daniel Smith guys are innovators. Schmincke is just exquisite, elegant, offering delicate but intense and powerful pigments that are presented in a more conventional, structured way. Exquisite is the best word for Schmincke paints.Their website offers lots of useful information for the beginner, and they also offer small mixer sets that are quite wonderful. Now, the Mijello Mission gold line has, to my knowledge, two lines of watercolor sets: the 36 count, and the 34 count. The 34 count, plus black and white, are really noteworthy and remarkable for being monopigments. That means that each color offered in this set is only made with one pigment, no blends. The end result are beautiful clean vibrant but delicate colors and color blends. Now, the MMG 36 count is made with both mono pigment tubes of color, and also some blends. Each tube contains 7 ml of paint, and an awesome plastic studio palette. When I bought my 36 count set, think I paid $54, which is an awesome deal, I think. I would think that this set would be a lovely, luxurious choice for a beginner. Even the set that includes both monopigments and blends provides beautiful colors. The MMG monopigments set is, in my opinion, a professional grade set.  I paid $160 for my set, and I use it constantly. When I think of Mijello Mission Gold watercolors, I think of the clean, vibrant, bright, but delicate colors. You can’t go wrong with any of the choices you are asking about. All are excellent in their own way. Hope this helps!
