Basic ROBLOX Lua Programming: (Black and White Edition)

This book was a gift to a teenager interested in coding. She is very satisfied as a beginner.

Its a great book, indeed, really teaches people the basics and is easy to understand, great for kids to get into scripting.There is one con about this book:The examples are outdated, ROBLOX updated some stuff.Not quite done with the book yet, hope to finish it soon :)

I bought this book to help my son learn Lua programming, but this book gets in the way of learning Lua. The trouble starts as soon as he describes how to use Roblox Studio in chapter 3. His description of how to use Roblox Studio (or the Roblox web site) doesn't correspond to anything in the IDE. For example there's no "View Place" to click on in the Places page as described on page 18. It continues downhill from there.Maybe this book was written for an earlier version of Roblox Studio, but it is simply wrong for what exists now.I'm an experienced IDE user (Eclipse, IntelliJ, and Netbeans) and this is another set of badly written or just incorrect instructions for how to use an IDE.

Kudos to the kid who wrote this book -- he is one smart kid, that's for sure. And on the positive side, the book goes through the various elements of Roblox and has examples that can be followed with some success. But the book is in serious need of editing. It is full of typos, grammatical and syntactic errors, is hard to follow and poorly organized. The figures, which are basically just screen dumps, are of poor quality and are not numbered or organized in a way that is connected to the text. The overall layout is dreary and dull and detracts from the content. While there is definitely a need for a book like this, I don't think anyone will be particularly excited about Roblox programming after reading this book.

I got this to learn about ROBLOX Lua and it really has been like a stepping stool for my scripting. It is a good book for beginners, and as long as you read it all well, you should understand it fine. A few typos, but they are mostly easy to infer the actual word. Already read intermediate, and waiting now for Advanced.

I rate 5 starts because this book helped me so much and now I understand scripting on roblox!!! I recommend this book strongly.

I liked the simplicity of the book and it was helpful. However, half of the code examples did not work even after I reviewed the code several times. I had no understanding why but thought that I would be able to look at the tutorials later and figure it out. Unfortunately, the links to the tutorials do not work either. I am not sure why. At any rate these two experiences drastically impact my rating as it is not meeting it's basic objectives. And if the error is on my side then I can safely assume that the instructions for a "Basic" book are not sufficient. Kudos, however, to the young entrepreneur. I admire the courage to get out and get it done.

My son loves playing Roblox but the programming he wanted to learn and wasn't sure how. This book really helped him. He was very happy to get it and was surprised I'd found it.
