Is the battery pack considered the remote?

No there is no remote. The battery pack has a switch Only problem is you have to stick the battery pack to the wall or hide it behind a photo I love mine tho looks great I hung it with command Adhesive strips

Will tape hold these up?

Depends on how strong your tape is. I would think those command strip hooks would work better :)

what size photos can these hold?

I had 4x6 photos on there but I'm pretty sure it could hold larger than that.

How do you open the battery box? I received no instructions.

There should be little clips you unclip and it opens! :)
