Buy This Book !!!
I've been playing the bass 25 years and this book is a must have for any SERIOUS bassit. It covers all the cats most people know, but plenty you may have never heard of. Plus it turns you to tons of tunes you might know !!!

Keep it low & funky
I have bought several books on the Bass from Amazon e.g.; techniques, lessons & genres. This book gives an excellent history on our most prolific Funky Bass players - good job

Wrong Category
When I searched for instructional books on playing a bass instrument, this one came up with all the others. It has nothing to do with instruction let alone rather dreary accounts by semi literate bass players. Money down the drain.

Must read!
Every bassist should read this book. Amazing from-the-horses-mouth stories of the bassline behind the song, with players telling how tones and parts appeared, what the studio was like, who else was there etc. The 'Rock with You' bassline story is fantastic, as is Anthony Jackson's chapter on recording with Chaka Khan. Fantastic discography for each era and bass player too, from the famous to the unheard of session men (who played on a million hits). One amazing statistic is that Motown's house band, The Funk Brothers, played on more No' 1 hits than The Beatles, The Stones, Elvis and the Beach Boys combined!

Great book, but terrible print. Go for the Kindle version!
This is a great collection of stories and interviews with the fathers of funk bass. So content-wise I would give 5 stars. BUT: The print is terrible! The normal text is fine, but the "deep cuts" text boxes are really hurting my eyes. The gray text on light-gray background would not be the worst, but the text ist completely blurry and grainy, which is giving me headaches reading. It looks like the text boxes were printed as images with very low resolution and compression artifacts. Maybe I got some weird reissue although the imprint does not state anything about a second edition or anything (just "Published in 2010 by Backbeat Books, An Imprint of Hal Leonard Corporation"). In the end I returned the paperback and got the Kindle version which is totally fine.
