Does the design of the track slow cars down or make some cars not able to roll over properly?

Yes the red turn pieces really slow cars down. If you have two turn pieces back to bak it will nearly bring the cars to a halt. If you try to apply more speed to counter this issue the cars will come off the track quite easily.

Can I purchase additional cars that go well with this track builder?

My grandson has about 100 cars and about 5 out of the 100 didn’t fly off, the turns are not that good! any Hot Wheels will work on these tracks.

Will this work with matchbox cars?

Yes, since both are 1:64 scale (same car size).
