It has a dedicated spot for the 'comfort grip' with joy-cons attached. AND another dedicated spot for a pro controller. As far as the hard case question... It's not hard like a briefcase. But it's stiff and rigid enough to hold form. You can "knock" on it with your knuckles. But you would also be able to crush it with force. But if it's being bumped into things while you're carrying it, it will be fine. As well as being beaten up inside another bag. You can confidently throw this inside a huge bag with other things and not worry because it is plenty strong.

The zipper pouch is not that big.
