Fine Molds 1/72 IJN Human Torpedo Kaiten Type 1 (Contains 2 Kaiten kits)"

Fine Molds has filled a void in the area of World War 2 Japanese naval weapons models with this fine kit. While everyone has heard about the Japanese Kami kaze aeroplanes used in the ending stages of the war, there were other man piloted weapons which volunteer crewmen would ram into the enemy, resulting in the death of himself. The Kaiten ( Heaven shaker ) was a torpedo with a small cockpit added with controls so it's pilot could guide it to an enemy ship. The Kaiten would be brought to the combat area riding piggyback in groups of four to six on conventional I- class submarines. THE KIT This excellent kit contains parts for two Kaiten. They go together well, are nicely detailed, and come with parts to display them on replicating the little railroad dollies they were moved about on. Three decal / paint schemes are given in the directions. I built my first as operationally deployed from Nov. 1944 to wars end. I will do the second as the two man training version. The directions are primarily in Japanese, however paint color suggestions are in English. The only deviation I recommend are to use German Panzer Grey paint in place of black. Often, using black the model will appier " too black " in my opinion. If you are a fan of Japanese naval vessels as I am , I'm sure you will love these models. The men who crewed these weapons have been described as everything from " idiotic fools " to " heroic samurai gods " depending on the speakers nationality and loyalties, but one thing I'm sure everyone can agree on - they had no shortage of courage.
