Great media server!
This is a great product! The 16 TB formatted to just 10 TB and was set up as a media server at home and storage for my home domain. With the solid state cash, I was able to load from multiple computers at the same time. Both Samsung smart TVs can play files from the SynologyDS918. The unit replaced several USB drives hooked to computers. Now everything is in a single place!

Amazingly fast!
Upgraded to this from an old terrastation. My DS918 is incredibly fast. I can transfer a gig in seconds. Setup was simple and the os has lots of tools.

Synology, the company and its products, suck
DS920/21108BRP1CFEMI had the single worst experience with any electronics purchase of my life when I bought a Synology DS920+. After assembling the product and spending $1800, it would not power up. I reviewed all of the start up instructions and troubleshooting steps. The web site would not accept support ticket information, serial number, model number. The chat support was not available, 2AM or 2PM literally. I tried to return it to Amazon and get a replacement, but they were not doing replacements, so I had to get a refund. Why is it that the customers' time and effort that is sacrificed when a company and a product suck? This one certainly does. 0 stars. People who work for a living shouldn't have their time wasted on people, products, and processes that don't work.

2 HDD dead
Two of the 4 seagate hdd's are flagged as not compatible by the DSM system, hard drives are in critical state on install, noone has time for this.

Make sure to configure RAID...
I like everything about the device, but within the first month of purchasing it one of the 4 HDDs failed. Tech Support was great and they are sending a replacement after showing proof of failure (screenshot of logs, nothing crazy). I can't justify 5 stars on this, though, given the immediate failure of a drive - they're Seagates, in case that would impact your decision. Really good example of why configuring RAID - the appropriate one for what you're storing - should be one of the first things on your list.

Not sure
I bought one of the syology nas with pre memory and hard drives installed...When i checked they put computer drives and low end nvme memory in the unit so i sent it back..I ended up buying the empty nas and nas rated drives with good nvme memory and it was less money..I cant say if it happens to everyone but it did to me...Running computers drives is the cheap way out but they will fail sooner then using the nas rated dirves....

Great NAS but newer versions available - DS918+ released in 2017
I purchased a DS918+ in late 2017 using my Father's Amazon account. The DS918+ has served me well over the past 5+ years. I been pleased with all aspects of the system. From its intuitive "Desktop" management console, ability to support multiple RAID options, and exceptional performance as a multimedia/PLEX server.Beyond the hardware, Synology offers dedicated apps that provide the ability to automatically backup your documents and files from your laptop, desktop, and mobile devices. For example "Drive" is similar to Microsoft's OneDrive but stored on your NAS instead of Microsoft's servers.Although the 918+ is a great NAS, the hardware is from 2017 and out of date now in 2023. I highly recommend looking at newer models available at similar or lower prices (423+ and 923+).
