This class of Okuma Makaira Fishing Rods are AWESOME!!!
This Okuma Makaira fishing rod is light-weight, but exceptionally tough. I live in San Diego County and La Nina has been good to us fishermen this year. In the last two months, there's has been an abundance of 100lb - 200+lb Bluefin tuna less than 30 miles off our shores. On a recent outing, I happened to be fishing with my Makaira MK-C-801H when I hooked up to a big Bluefin tuna (pictured). The fish weight about 150lbs and was very strong. Throughout the hour and forty-five minute battle, my rod was frequently bent like an upside down "U". Initially, I thought I was outgunned, but my Makaira fishing rod performed exceptionally well. As a matter of fact, it greatly exceeded my expectations. Most fishing rods rated at 20 - 40lbs wouldn't of withstood the kind of punishment that that big beast put on my Makaira. I love this fishing rod and I intend to buy more. For the price, you can't purchase a better quality fishing rod.

Great Rods! I troll for Marlin and tuna every week and they take the abuse. Very good quality roller guides and workman ship. Everyone that comes on my boat comments on the look and quality. I now own 13 in different sizes and I'm very satisfied with them all.

Great value!
Great rod for the money. Just go to the Okuma site and look up the model number to be certain you're getting the handle style (deckhand versus reel seat) you want.

I really like the look of the rod and the fit and finish is nice. I did get multiple compliments on the abalone wrap. I have used this rod on two trips in Southern Ca. First 3/4 day trip it didn't get much use but it cast heavier jigs well. I also like the ability to place the reel at any location I feel is best. Second trip was A two-day and wound up hooking a 75-lb bluefin. The rod blank handled the fish very well over the 30+ minute battle. On the rail it had enough pulling power to lift this thing from its attempts to go deep.I did, however, run into a problem with the grip material. It was far too soft causing the reel foot to dig in under the stress. I have it backed up with a Cork Puppy but that only helped a little. If this was a much smaller fish I would have taken off another star but given that it wasn't really intended for this grade of fish, I have to be generous. I have also noticed that the guides have small chips in their finish from what seems to be light handling. So far no sign of corrosion so it may just wind up being cosmetic. Given their value, I definitely plan to buy another Makaira rod but with a reel seat.
