This is a great phonics book for young children.Featuring the characters from Oxford Reading Tree (Kipper, Chip, Floppy and the gang).This is a great way to help children to read and spell using phonics.The book follows the alphabetic code (the way one sound can be represented by 1-4 letters, by different spellings, or when a letter group have alternative sounds)The words are ordered using sounds identified in words that we want to spell.The book is split into 3 parts. The first section is based on initial sounds identified in words (the consonant sounds and the 5 short vowels sounds), there is a box that shows spelling alternatives which appear in the middle or at the end of a word.The 2nd section contains long vowel sounds (sounds that appear in the middle or ends of words).The last section is a list of common and tricky words.This book has a clear layout and is simple to use with illustration throughout.A great resource to help young children who are starting school.Excellent quality.Great value.Would recommend.

This book comes from Oxford Reading Tree who produce the well-known school/home reading books with Chip, Biff and Kipper. This is a spelling dictionary so there are no definitions in this book. There is one double page at the front explaining how to use it.Words are ordered by their starting sound rather than letter. Eg any word starting with an /s/ sound is grouped together but these words may actually begin s, ce (celebrate), ci (cinema), cy (cycle) or sc (science). This allows children to check a spelling themselves where they might not have otherwise looked in the correct section of an ordinary dictionary to find their word. Each section also has a list of words that have the same sound at the middle or end eg for s -ss (class), -ce (bounce), -se (chase), -st- (castle), although this section is very limited and not as helpful.There is then a section on long vowel sounds and examples of each sound, and finally a double page of common words eg days of the week, months, numbers etc. There are small illustrations throughout the book, including Biff, Chip and Kipper and other characters from their stories. Each sound is a different colour and words are written in different colours to help identify the different sounds/digraphs.A useful precursor to an ordinary dictionary for those just learning to write/spell or those finding it difficult. The style of the book is very much aimed at infant school children.

Interesting concept, this dictionary is not the usual alphabetical format it’s arranged by phonics sound going in the order of Satpinmd... and so on. You also have sections just for diagraphs like Ch, and also for diagraphs found in the middle of words like or / ir and more.This is not the most intuitive for adults but you can get used to it and I think it will be very helpful for my 4 year old daughter when starting reception in September. The way it’s set up helps to reinforce phonics sounds, and can easily be referred to.For example, because the word Cinderella starts with a sound like S it will be listed with S and all of this is explained properly in the book

I am giving this phonics dictionary 5 stars, but recommending it mainly for anyone teaching phonics in the classroom, tutor, and maybe for parents who want to better understand how systematic phonics teaching works.The book is nothing like a regular dictionary - it has two sections first with words grouped by their initial sound, then by vowel sounds. at the end is a short section on tricky words. The words are given in the order they are taught in schools, so start with the first ones for younger school children.The words and pictures in the dictionary are linked to the Oxford Reading Tree books so it is most useful in those schools using that scheme.

I have a six year old and I’ve been struggling to explain how certain words look different but have the same sound especially during homeschooling.This is a very clever book, full of illustrations of the characters we’ve grown to know through reading school books. It shows the sounds grouped together with numerous spellings beneath them, visually showing the same sounds in different ways. It looked a little overwhelming at first glance but there’s a full explanation at the beginning of the book explaining the ‘alphabetic code’. All the common / tricky words are listed in the back which we are learning. A great resource to assist early readers - would highly recommend!

This is a very useful teaching and learning resource to help your child to read and spell using phonics.The book is divided into sections where the first section is focusing on the first sounds identified in words. The second section consists of the long vowel sounds.Very nice illustrations alongside and children will be all familiar with the nice characters as they already know them from the “Biff, Chip and Kipper books”This book is a perfect support for the phonics screening check. I can practice it with my little son at home.
