It should be pretty coarse. You want your coffee grounds to be roughly 1 to 1.5 mm in size. Remember to use 2 tbsp of coffee for every cup of water and brew for 4 minutes. If you want your coffee stronger or weaker use more or less coffee. If you're still unsure how much to grind your coffee go to Starbucks and ask them to grind your coffee for a French press.

Q: Size?? is it really 4.5 x 4.5 x 8.5" as the specs state? The Bodum I'm replacing is plenty big at 2.5 x 2.5 x 5".

The box is that size, so it will be a wee bit smaller. But yes, pretty tall.
