Quality control issue or counterfeit?
The first one arrived with a defect (see the first picture). There were jagged dents around the zero on the slider. The replacement I received has a design different from the Mitutoyo's official diagram (see the second picture). The depth bar is supposed to be fixed with a pin, mine was welded.

Poor craftsmanship
As one of the previous reviewers noted Mitutoyo clearly has quality control issues or just low standards. It's a precision tool for Christ's sake, how can it be asymmetric and poorly machined?!Lower caliper tips have asymmetric contour (see pictures 1 and 2), gap between them is asymmetric (it shouldn't affect measuring though). One side on top ruler is poorly machined with rough uneven edge (picture 3), edges all around are not smooth and most of them have burr.I might measure fine, but for a $100 price tag quality is unacceptable.

Nothing beats analog
I wanted digital, but preferred the learning curve of the Vernier scale, and want to get good at reading analog measurements before getting a digital.Honestly, I haven't really had a good opportunity to use this yet, but I know I'll be glad that I have it when that time comes. Feels robust, stiff and doesn't have a lot of slack. And the price I payed, and getting the Mitutoyo name with that, I really can't complain at all.

Worth it to spend more on Mitutoyo
The extra cost of this item compared to the cheaper Chinese-made versions is worth it if you want or need to trust your caliper measurements. I purchased this after purchasing a cheaper version at about 1/3 the price. That vernier caliper was inaccurate and poorly constructed. I left a review with photos. This one is beautiful, smooth, easier to read, and finely crafted.

Best in class
Mitutoyo. That’s really all you need to know. That is extra true here with the vernier calipers. They’re buttery smooth to operate. Surprisingly easy to read even for aging eyes. You cannot find a better set of calipers.

Nice caliper
I like it. Didn't experience any of the quality issues reported by some others. Very smooth in operation. Easy to read, I think, and my eyes ain't that great anymore. ;-)

well-made, accurate calipers - genuine too. (As purchased directly from Amazon)
Received the calipers in a flat Mitutoyo box (orange colored), sealed in a plastic back inside a thin vinyl case. All docs were multi-language and all "made in" labels mentioned Japan. Quality looked good, although one of the ID gauge tips was bent (I'll stone it out later). The depth tang was spot-welded onto the frame, as per previous reviews so I had my questions. I called Mitutoyo and talked with the rep about these caliper as I wanted to make sure it wasn't a fake. He compared the description of mine to a unit he had from their warehouse. The packaging of mine was the same as the one he had in-hand. He didn't disassemble the unit he had, but he mentioned that Mitutoyo can and does make changes in manufacturing methods...so the spot-weld is not an indication of "fake-ness". The spot-weld is done clean and accurately. The Rep did mentioned that he's never seen a fake vernier caliper (ever). The baseline digital ones are the calipers that end up getting copied as there isn't enough money in the verniers (per his opinion). I'm satisfied that the calipers I received are genuine Mitutoyo and the unit checked out accurate with a series of gauge block tests.

Great calipers.
Great calipers! No issues here. From what I can see they are genuine from Amazon.

Simple, accurate, well-made, robust
Before buying this I bought a £17 digital calliper from Sealey which was so inaccurate (it drifted by as much as 40mm) and so poorly made that I sent it straight back for a refund and looked for an analogue calliper instead.Mitutoyo are a brand I know as I've encountered their large-scale industrial measurement instruments at work so I trusted them to make good quality kit. Having said that, I also trusted the Sealey brand too. This Mitutoyo calliper is almost 3 times the price of the Sealey digital one and it doesn't have the added cost of the digital readout so I'd expect it to be a lot better, but the truth is the two products are a world apart. This is a simple, well-made, robust, precision tool that allows you to accurately measure to within 0.02mm. None of this could be said for the digital calliper that I tried first. You could say this is simply a case of 'you get what you pay for'. But it's also the fact that it's easy to be lured by things like the ease and simplicity of a digital readout, but it's a false benefit. The simplicity and ease of use of this analogue calliper easily matches a digital one and it's far more accurate and not prone to error (at least only to human error).Thoroughly recommended, though if you're not old enough to remember slide rules, you'll need to read the instructions (which are very simple by the way).

does it need batteries ?
NO it doesn’t need those damn silly “what size do I want” batteries just as your discussing something with a customer in China. And where has my tiny screwdriver gone to get the battery compartment open ? And where the F do I get one of those silly batteries in Indonesia or Kenya ?Well engineered non electronic accurate bit of kit. Become an engineer again. Tick. ( you don’t have to zero the damn thing either ). Mustard.

Tool of good quality.
Very nice instrument of good precision and high quality for a modern day of cutting costs.Definitely not a counterfeit, although I agree with some points of TurtleFoot's review. This model doesn't have fine adjustment screw.Well, it's not as good as a German tool from 1930s, but still quite nice instrument in my opinion.

Probably the best mx of price and accuracy
Works very well, no batteries to go flat, accurate, very well made.
