Perfect for 4 year olds
Several three and four year olds I know love pirates. This book is perfect - cute pictures, not scary, and children can paint with water without adult help.

Kids love it!
The sheets are of good thick quality so if too much water is used, it doesn't blot onto the other side. My kids 2 and 5 love it. These are the best paint with water sheets I have found. We have had other brands with Hello Kitty and Lisa Frank - they do not compare. The pages are thin. The colors on the Melissa and Doug ones also spread much easier - makes painting easy for little ones who don't yet understand the concept of putting paint onto brush first.

My kid loved it
The pages could be thicker, but i bought this for a five-year-old foster kid who needed help developing fine motor skills. He loved it, and it did help. My only complaint is that the pages warp some when wet, but I doubt they could sell it for this price if the paper was thicker. Overall, good product.

Toddler parents, you will love this!
I bought this water painting book as a Christmas gift for my 3 year old. Living in a place with harsh winters, I decided to create a special art space for the little ones so that they have plenty to occupy themselves with when we are stuck indoors. The trouble is, I didn't exactly want that space to get permanently ruined by toddlers who are basically created with ultimate destruction as their end goal. (Toddler parents, you know what's up!)I saw a lot of REAL paint and was like, "Aww...that'd be so cute. They'll make me so many pretty paintings and wear little smocks and it'll be like a magazine." And then I laughed at myself, cause really what would happen is the nice new rug I bought would be painted, the carpet would be painted, the walls would be painted, my kids would be painted, and then I would lay down in defeat and I would get painted.Insert water painting book! Yeah, buddy! Now my 3 year old is like, "Mom! Time for painting!" And I feel no fear. This is the greatest miracle in my life since I discovered Color Wonder markers. There are a lot of options for these obviously but I opted for Melissa & Doug because having bought a ton of their puzzles, I know it's a great brand and that it isn't ever money wasted. All you do is dip the brush in water, and the patterns on the page create a dye run to form the colors. Added bonus for toddlers thinking this is magic.

My 3 1/2 year old loves it
This is a good quality product, and my 3 1/2 year-old loves it. I agree with other reviewers who gave high ratings. The pages are perforated at the top, so you can take one out easily. We tape it to a large plastic mat to minimize mess. Colors are bright, and the finished pictures look great. We often paint together. Initially I (mom) was assigned to do the small details. Now the small details are less daunting, so I'm assigned to do the slightly boring backgrounds. Lots of fun for for everybody!

Thick paper, just the right amount of "paint"
The water color paint is printed on the page as a pattern. You use the water to activate it and fill the page. There is just the right amount needed. It is fun and clean.

Messier than expected
I love all Melissa and Doug products. This book is probably my least favorite though. It's great that you can paint with water, but this book doesn't really save on the mess. the pages are very colored in with color/dry paint. So once water hits the page, there is a lot of color... More than other similar types of books. My kids' arms were covered in paint when they finished these painting pages.I bought these in an attempt to be painting without the mess, but they still were quite messy for my toddlers. I'm sure they'd be fine for and older child though.
