How did you come up with the idea for this product? In 2013, we were creating prototypes of new home sensing technologies to see how far we could push technology around the house. At the same time, one of the co-founders at Scout was researching home security for his new home. He quickly discovered that the options available were expensive, had dated technology and hadn't changed design-wise since the 1980s. Those two worlds collided and the team immediately went to work. We saw an opportunity to create a security system that was sophisticated enough to operate with today's technology, designed to be visually appealing alongside modern decor, and priced at a point where it was affordable to the 83% of homes in the US that did not have security. What makes your product special? The user experience is what sets Scout apart. Making devices is easy. Making devices talk is easy. But, an intuitive end-to-end experience that is a delight to use is rare. So, we focus our attention on making the best user experience possible. At Scout we require no long-term commitment from our customer. Renters and homeowners alike are welcome. With a self-installed system, no credit check and no contract in place, customers can customize their system as they see fit - from the number of devices they purchase to how they want to monitor their system. Even with our paid monitoring plans, customers can cancel at anytime. Our app gives customers control of their home from anywhere, as well as access to other smart home products that Scout works with like Nest, Echo and Hue. Finally, we made it a priority to create a sleek look and feel that would fit in with the modern, connected home. We want home security to be appealing, affordable and accessible to everyone. What has been the best part of your startup experience? The best part of the creation process is seeing the first customer orders fulfilled, used and loved. Years of hard work and long hours went into crafting the Scout experience. When the customers let you know that you've delivered on what you promised - that's the best part. Everything is challenging when you're creating a new hardware device from the ground up. I can't pinpoint one step in the process that is more or less challenging, rather, the whole process from end-to-end is a struggle to produce what you've promised, at the price point you've promised and to get every detail right to deliver on the experience. We feel we've done just that, but it was a multi-year struggle to make Scout a reality.

Just kidding, false alarm!
I have three of these running as part of my overall Scout setup. And these are definitely the weakest link in the system. The batteries die frequently, even with the latest firmware. And one of them is prone to false alarms, which is the worst way to wake up in the middle of the night! "Garage Sensor has detected motion". It's also the best way to destroy confidence in your alarm system. If you get false alarms, it's only a matter of time before you say "screw it" and go back to sleep rather than tip toe to the basement in your bathrobe ready to scream and beat the crap out of a burglar.

Security components failed regularly, customer service unable to help, only partial refund given.
I had numerous problems with various pieces losing connectivity repeatedly. I contacted Scout support and they first told me the devices were probably too far away. That seemed unlikely since the devices were as little as 12' from the hub. Then Scout support told me that they had found a faulty battery issue and would send replacement batteries. I'm not sure when the faulty battery issue was discovered, but it was concerning that a security system had batteries that were dying less than 6 weeks after installing them.Unfortunately, that didn't solve the issue either. They offered to replace the hub or to allow me to return it for a full refund, waiving the restocking fee. After spending many, many hours trying to get this fixed, and being without a reliable security system for over 3 months, I opted to return the items. I was eventually given a refund for about 75% of my original purchase price. When I contacted Scout about this, they then told me it was out of their hands.I am very disappointed in the product, which is clearly not ready to use as a real home security solution, and in the customer service provided by Scout.

Owned Scout Alarm for about a year, works great, happy customer, would recommend.
This is a good product, it works good, have owned it for a year and still works good. Battery life could be better, I'm getting about 3 months on the batteries but compared to other alarm options this was the best choice for me. I'm going to buy another. Alarm systems in general can really be a pain for the inexperienced and Scout has done a good job making it simple. This is an update March 29th, 2018 - owned for years. I just want to say Scout Customer Service is absolutely top notch!

Very easy to set up
Lightweight, compact and discrete motion sensor that blends in quite well in the corner of a wall without being too noticeable. Has the option to be installed with the included double sided tape, using a wall mounted screw (not included), or set atop a shelf. Very easy to set up. Sensitivity is a pretty spot on but it does pick up my large breed dog.

Pets set off too easily
While the unit works well in terms of detecting a wide range of motion covering an adequate area, animals do easily set them off. If you have pets and were planning on using motion sensors in place of glass break or open sensors, this is not the best option.

DIY alarm system that charges you monthly to use it
Scout is an awful company. Starting January 1st, 2016, any new customers can no longer self-monitor their purchased Scout systems for free. All you will be able to do pretty much without paying a monthly charge is swipe your fobs on the door sensor if you buy one of those. In order to get any notifications via the app, e-mail, SMS or phone you will need to purchase a monthly plan. If I would have known they were this type of company, I would NOT have bought their alarm system. I will certainly not be recommending their product to any of my family or friends from now on.

best security system on the market
I did a ton of research before I bought this system and so far I'm thrilled with my decision. I've had normal (ADT) systems in the past but hardly ever used them because it was such a hassle to arm and disarm them. (And forget about trying to program custom modes!) In our new home I wanted something that didn't stick out like a sore thumb and didn't cost me $40 a month. Bingo! I looked at a bunch of other systems (e.g. Iris from Lowes, Canary, etc.) but nothing else had the combination of good looks, low monthly coast, and a wireless 3G connection that works even when your internet or power goes down. The app is really well designed. And it was a breeze to setup. No wires! Just went around sticking the sensors to my doors and windows and I was up and running in about 45 minutes. Highly recommended!
