Q: will this bath drain fit an 18 inch tub?

It depends on the height from the drain to the overflow on your tub. I have an 18 inch tub and it was about 13 inches from the drain to the bottom of the overflow and it wasn't quite long enough. The good thing is, the pipe is standard schedule 40, so you can get a longer piece for a couple bucks at a home improvement store.

does not come pre-assembled. Don't know about the gluing as my contractor installed it.

Q: How do you take the drain out to clean?

The chrome pop-up simply unscrews from the drain by rotating it counter-clockwise. Next, you'll need a four-lug barbell shaped tub/sink drain installation tool (available from Home Depot or Lowe's for about $10) to unscrew the metal drain itself if you want to replace the drain or allow full opening for access by a plumber's snake. Once the drain blockage is cleared, simply apply new sealant or a rubber gasket under the drain's flanged lip and re-screw it back into the threaded PVC pipe. Tighten using the barbell wrench taking care not to overtighten - all you want to do is tighten the drain enough to prevent leaks.

probably plated plastic, not an expensive part.
