Automobile Electrical and Electronic Systems

Very Nice!
I have been working on my cars since I was a 16 years old. Cars have become very complex in terms of electrical and electronic systems, which was the impetus for purchasing this book. Being an EE, much of the circuits in this book are easy to understand. This is more of a reference book to further my knowledge on electrical systems in modern cars, and how to diagnose them using a bidirectional diagnostic tool with greater clarity. I like to work on things with my hands, diagnose equipment, repairing and replacing parts. This book should be enjoyable to read and study after flipping through many sections.

A good reference book, a bad textbook
I'm a 36 year old machinist who bought this book in order to get a better, general understanding of automotive electrical systems. I went in with the understanding that this was a textbook for future technicians (i.e. students in trade school) and that there would be a focus on fundamentals and best practices.I was shocked when the section on safety was little more than three paragraphs and a table of common risks and the information boils down to (1) use common sense and (2) when in doubt, ask someone. There is no information about standard safety topics things such as hearing and eye protection, the different types of fires, or safety data sheets. The table's section on electrical shock is bogged down in undefined jargon and incomplete sentences.Moving on the section of that deals with the principles of electricity, which only makes up 8 pages of the 69 page chapter called "Electrical and electronic principles", I can describe them as textual equivalent of someone waving their hands and saying "don't worry about it". Topics that would usually be given entire chapters with lots of detailed examples are reduced to stream-of-consciousness bullet points parading as singular paragraphs. The explanations he gives are often so bare bones and poorly worded that I found myself getting confused about topics I already understood from other sources. If this is your first time coming across topics like semiconductors, electron flow versus conventional current flow, or the relationship between magnetism and electricity, this is not going to be a helpful resource. The remainder of the chapter is a list of the assorted components, circuits, and sensors you're going to find in a car.The rest of the book is much of the same. Long chapters with vague titles filled with short sections of terse prose. This book works better as an encyclopedia than as a text book. There's no glossary, list of important terms to memorize, study questions, or examples of the things being discussed. The final "chapter" is a two page advertisement for the guy's website. With all the bad I just listed, I do want to stress that the information in this book seems to be on the level: hard won, exhaustive technical knowledge that if you can cram it into your brain, will allow you access the deeper workings of this field. Mr. Denton appears to be a knowledgeable and experience mechanic and perhaps he is a gifted, in-person teacher. I also have his "Advanced Automotive Fault Diagnosis" which seems to be more streamlined and more in his wheelhouse (I don't think he likes having to do the kind of hand holding that goes into an introduction to a topic).I don't think this book had an editor. There's inconsistencies in the use of punctuation, little errors in the text that make it difficult to follow (wrong page numbers for the tables, etc), and an inconsistent tone of prose that is at times jarring. All in all, a good reference book, a bad textbook.

How much he enjoyed the book
I bought it for my Grandson...the manager of a Tirerama service store. Covers all of the equipment currently in use by Tirerama!

not
If you don't know a thing about how cars work I guess that person could find some use for it. After reading through some of the chapters and thumbing through the rest< I threw the book in the trash can.

This by far one of the best I am using for my studies
The author Tom Denton has been in the car industry for the past 40 years his knowledge is limitless, furthermoreI have thee of his current books, but also I have emailed him on a number of occasions for advice and he recommended me to join his Automotive Technology Academy which is free to join if you have bought his book, this is by far more enlighting than going to Colledge. let me put on record his pictures are mostly in colour, what a pleaser to read and learn with so much support Anthony
