Petra and the Lost Kingdom of the Nabataeans

My Paperback Fell Apart
Taylor's book is a fine introduction to Petra and the Nabataeans. It is full of reliable information, and written so clearly that it will appeal to just about everyone. The photographs, taken by the author herself, are breathtaking. The book is organized chronologically, with separate chapters on Petra, religion, language, and the Babatha archive. I wish the book had even more coverage of Petra, since that is the one Nabataean site that most people visit.Unfortunately, the paperback edition of this book is so poorly bound that, in my copy at least, many of the pages actually separated from the binding, after turning them only once or twice. Since this is a book that most readers (including me) will want to keep and refer to again, I do recommend that you buy the hardback version, unless you are willing to put up with loose pages in your book.Nevertheless, just about anyone who is interested in the Nabataeans, or visiting Jordan, will want to have this book in their library (loose pages and all).

The creativity, mores, ethics, feelings of a people with whom I feel connected!
The photos are great, with clarity of details. My favorite chapter, chapter six, is inspiring, moving, and gives pause for deep contemplative thought on my part. Chapter five was also very enjoyable. The entire book: words and pictures, is a delight and joy of inspiration and pleasure. It draws me into its pages, one by one, paragraph by paragraph, and I discover that somehow perhaps only in some small way this is also part of my story, my own history, my own future. I love the book The Art work is awesome!

Elegantly Assembled, Eloquently written.; a Thorough Overview of A Fascinating Ancient Society
This book is so elegantly put together and expressive of this ancient civilization, the reader loses sense to the fact it was probably a very painstaking project undertaken by the author, Jane Taylor. I have not come across another source of information that is compiled this well with everything we know about the Nabateans, at least as far back as 2002, since a lot has definitely emerged since archeologically speaking... I still believe this book is the best compilation albeit now lacking new information uncovered since. I would highly recommend it for anyone academically or leisurely interested in this mysterious people.

Window film solved a problem for me. Yes, the size available was a little too large but that's why God made scissors. Installation would have been easy for a younger person but a bit of a struggle for we "seniors". I strongly recommend the product and the supplier but if you're old like methink about who's available to help you with installation if it requires climbing or bending.Price seemed high until I saw the results and it's worth every penny!

Not a primary resource, but very good information backed by primary researchers
Although some things are debated still, there are different aspects that are really good. Remembering this is a book and not a research article is important.

It also read too much like a textbook
The typeset in the book is too small making it difficult to read. It also read too much like a textbook. She has one chapter near the end which is about the day to day life of a woman late in the empire, I wish the whole book was written more like that chapter. We are going to Jordan in a month, I did learn some basic things about the Nabateans but overall this book was not that good.

disappointment
extremely dry and unreadable. i live in the middle of that stuff and i'm extremely interested about middle east history. but i can't finish this book, threw it away wile i was in midway. at the end of each page i already forget what was in the beginning of the same page. feels like written by robot. poor binding on the top of that. book fell apart at first day of reading. one star for really great photgraphy.

Very poor print quality
My first impression was of great disappointment - Jane Taylor is a gifted photographer (and a delightful person) and would have been so upset with her beautiful photos coming out so poorly on low-grade paper. Notwithstanding, her work is a major contribution to this fascinating subject.

It was well worth waiting for although the photographs did not really show many of the interiors of tombs etc like my other one
This book was a replacement that had not arrived here so it did not make the delivery days.It was well worth waiting for although the photographs did not really show many of the interiors of tombs etc like my other one does as the colours in many of these buildings is well worth mentioning. Extensive text, useful explanations.Thank you
