Fixed Life Fitness X1 Elliptical Cross-Trainer
My Life Fitness X1 Elliptical Cross-Trainer from Costco was purchased back in 2014. It has been working perfectly for almost 10 winters. One day when getting onto it, I cranked the resistance to 20 like I usually do and the resistance never came. Eventually the screen said ERROR and the whole thing stopped working. It worked fine if you never added resistance.I took the unit apart and this is pretty much the only electronics inside the base. I pulled it, googled the number on the plastic housing, and this came up. I tested the resistance to ground for all of the contacts on my unit, and they all came up as open, so I figured my unit was dead.Ordered the new part and popped it in, and reassembled. The elliptical works like new. Installation isn't too tricky, so long as you don't drop parts into the void. You'll need a long phillips screwdriver, a 13 and 14mm hex wrench, and an 8mm hex wrench.

Life Fitness X1
Level read Off on display of X1 which was not listed here, but after taking off cover it was same part number. Replacement took about 1 hour. Works like new now.

Fixed my X5 Life Fitness elliptical
Replacement was fairly straightforward. Recommend emailing life fitness for the service manual before you start. But if your resistance is reading “OFF” this is the most likely culprit. Btw the motor has a potentiometer in it so it knows what position it’s in. But it easiest to swap when the resistance is at 20, which it should default to when the machine shuts off. This is when the cable has the least tension pulling on the eddy current magnet brake.

Just what I needed
I replaced this on my Life Fitness RS1 and it now works great. It is possible to replace this part yourself, but you need some specialized knowledge:1) you will likely need to disconnect at least one pedal crank arm to get the side cover off. To do this, you likely need a crank arm removal tool2) take a picture of the motor and cable assembly before you disconnect it. the direction he cable goes on he pulley is critical3) it is important that the new and old motors be in the same resistance position. You may have to power on the bike and adjust the resistance to get the old and new motors to match otherwise the calibration is messed up.I found a short YouTube video that described how to perform much of the replacement. It’s worth researching before you DYI.
