Fun adventure
SUPERGIRL is having something of a Renassiance, which is a good thing as she had something of a twenty-year "hiccup" when people at DC comics decided both she and Batgirl had to go during the CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS. She was returned to continuity with the Batman/Superman: Public Enemies comic and has been struggling for an identity ever since. Basically, DC writers struggled with the idea of a perky and happy young woman as if the concept was some sort of Lovecraftian starfish alien. Thankfully, it turns out the writers of the CW television show have done the job for them and the "Rebirth" Supergirl is designed to make her as much like the one on TV as possible.Supergirl is now working for the D.E.O, has a pair of foster parent D.E.O agents, and has most of her original backtory back. She's also working for Cat Grant despite the fact it's questionable why she would in this universe. Alex Danvers wasn't imported from the television show, which is a shame, and she also has no relationship with J'onn Jones. Despite this, it's still very familiar to fans of the show and I like the fact she's an awkward woman warming to a new environment. It's a little weird having the Danvers so incredibly invested in the almost-grown daughter they adopted three weeks ago but that's the problem with retcons. The only real misstep here is the fact the enemy of this volume is the Cyborg Superman a.k.a. Zor-El, Kara's father. While archenemy fathers are a decent idea (Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader for instant), it's something which needs to be built into the character from the beginning like Cassandra Cain and David Cain. Here, it's just really strange to see him being a psychopathic controlling dad out to raise Argo City as a bunch of cyborg vampires. He's a decent enough villain but I wonder if it's just impossible for Kryptonians to be depicted as mostly good.Still, overall, I liked it and will be taking the next volume up.

Tries to be both the show and the comic, to mixed success
Supergirl has often had something of an identity crisis in comics. Often taking a backseat to her cousin, she is all the time given different backstories and even varying secret identities. This series seems to be an attempt, yet again, to soft reboot her stuff from the New 52, although I believe that is all still in continuity. In particular, this is drawing in many elements of the television series, such as her adoptive Danvers family and Cat Grant, alongside the ongoing comic material. The big problem here is that it doesn't quite pull of these elements. Kara feels considerably younger than she did prior in this continuity, which is in-and-of-itself a tad confusing, which clashes with the tv elements, since she is already an independent adult in that. The family stuff is okay, but only connects to her parents, when the show gave her a sister as the heart of her family connections. Cat's stuff feels like they're attempting to do a "well-intentioned mentor puts on a jerk façade" like the show as well, but the execution just isn't there to make it work. None of it comes across atrociously, but it is often weak or "standard" at best. To put it bluntly, this comic made a SPACE WEREWOLF less exciting than it should be.

OK
Just OK. I like that they kept Supergirl a 16 year old high school student rather than a adult like the TV show. I think it helps to differentiate her from Superman. The writing was good but nothing great. All the alternate cover art and issue #0 had the best art. I was not a fan of the regular artist Brian Ching at all. His art looked like unfinished sketches. Otherwise I would give this a better rating. I will still be buying vol. 2.

Huge improvement over the New52 Supergirl.
As opposed to the New52 take on Supergirl, this one is inspired by the TV show on CBS/CW. This Supergirl is light, optimistic, and trusting. She can be pretty arrogant at times, but otherwise is alot like the TV version that so clearly inspired her. So many details are borrowed or adapted from the TV show from the focus on National City or Cat Grant or the DEO or the Danvers'. This Supergirl has a life of sorts, and isn't just bouncing hectically from one situation to the other, never spending more than an issue or two in one place which is what the New52 version did.The art is very cartoon-y, looking more manga inspired than Kirby-inspired. Kara gets an outfit and artist that are less geared towards 14 year old boys. The editors clearly are trying to attract girls to this character.
