Great Russian Short Stories, by Yelena Francis (translator and editor) is a collection of known short stories, by known authors, but also less known outside Russia (for example, A. Grin and L. Zinovieva-Annibal). This book is not only for a dual language reader, although from the reaction of those, it is clear, what a delight it is to be able to read the original and then see the skilful and inspired translation. For people who learn either Russian or English it is valuable learning tool. However, at the same time, this book is also for those who are interested in Russia. It is a glimpse into the soul of the Russian people, their social interactions, from simple folks to complex intellectuals. The book is easy to read and the stories are moving. The book has illustrations at the beginning of each story, which gives it an added appeal by augmenting ones imagination and reinforcing the feeling of reality. Most stories are worthy of several reading.This book I recommend to young & older students of Russian Culture and History, Russian Language, and those who simply like excellent literature.

Dec 24th - I was surprised by the Amazon box: My dual-language russian book had arrived !!! Great! Starting with a pretty small Gorky's story. Nice, fascinating . And coming to the more recent russian writers - fifteen short tales in russian language on the left-hand page and english translations on the right-hand side. Appropriate for the intermediate-level russian students as well as teachers! Great is the word I would name it! As great was this Christmas gift for me ! Thanks to Amazon people again! The book is excellent. However a handy russian-english and english russian vocabulary could be added. This is the case in the book Russian stories I have purchased some time ago. The same applies to the accents which are in the book Russian short stories missing but are of enormous help when studying the russian language.

Good stories. I got this book for my teens because in now days it is not so easy to find good short stories for their age. Most of present literature for teens are just junk. By reading this one they are really learning true kindness and wisdom. They are taking a turn to take this book to school and read it on their break time.Thank you.

These are well translated Russian classics, but not necessarily appropriate for the average intermediate Russian language student. The language used in the original classics is a little archaic by modern standards, and the authors seemed to delight in complex sentences that one will never encounter actual dialogue. This book would be good for those students who are going to be eventually doing their own translations of Russian literature. I do not recommend it for those who are hoping to enhance their general conversational skills.

Very good collection, better than average translation even though Russian is very difficult to translate into English.

This is a great book for intermediate students of Russian, or for Russian speakers learning English.

残念ながらударенияは付いていません。解説もRussian Stories: A Dual-Language Book [Russian-English](こちらはударения付き)より詳しくありません。というわけで、学習用にはちょっと非効率的です。

Nice book and story, this is also great for beginners who are learning russian language, but I have a question why this is not the same cover of the first two photos ?(which is more apeling than the thrid photo...) :/
