Nicely made and designed except for cable anchoring to spool
With the worm gear drive handle does not spin when handle is released and load stays in position. Be aware that each crank revolution brings in a very small amount of cable so I added a coupling nut and stud to use a cordless drill to speed up retrieval .The hex drive model would facilitate using a drill. Only negative is the method recommended for anchoring the cable. With the stiffness of 1/4 inch cable, the crossed over cable sticks out from the spool enough that it scrapes against the side plate and scrapes the finish off.

Manuel hitch
The product is great the only problem is that it came with out the hex nut that holds the handle it is missing

Used this to hoist Jeep hard top up to ceiling
This is great, we finally figured out how to get the Jeep top off the floor with this little jem. It works great! I didn't know what a worm gear was but it turns out you can just stop and start whenever you want and when you let go whatever you are hauling up will just stay and not come crashing down. I will say it is very slow at moving things but it really helps if you put a drill on it and let the drill do the work... Fantastic!

Worth the extra cost
So i decided to build a small dump trailer. I've built a few trailers, but never a dump. First I purchased a belt style thinking I could make that work "wrong" but it was fun to play that strap when it was under a load, sounded like a mouth harp. So then I read about the worm drive winch that holds its position under load, no need for a locking mechanism. So off to harbor freight to pick up their inexpensive one. One load the winch gears were toast, so I spent the money and purchased this one with the hex drive so I could run it with a cordless drill.I'm impressed, I lubed it up and have run this thing up and down, under a 2000lb load of mulch. Stays right where you stop, smooth and steady up or down, and virtually effortless with my little drill. I love this thing so much I bought another for a future project. holy Cow, These things are awesome. If you plan to use a drill to run this winch(highly recommended if you use it a lot or the length is very far) then opt for the (WG2000HEX) you get a handle with a socket that is removable then just get a socket to fit in your drill. If you already have one with the handle, you can just purchase the hex drive to swap out in your unit like I did or use two nuts against each other like a jam nut and remove the handle.

Not bad, pretty expensive
Decent quality. But very slow to retract or wind the cable on the spool with the handle. Would be unusable if I did not use a battery-powered drill. Need to pull the handle those. I understand it's a tradeoff for power but some kind of means of accelerated idle (without load) rotation would be nice. I'll see if I can improve it.

Slow
I like this winch just fine, the gears mesh ok and it's built really well. Being a worm gear type winch this one is slow, very slow even when I connect my electric drill it's still fairly slow. If your going to use a drill and need to wind in more than about 15 feet of cable you might need two batteries.
