Is it glass or plastic?** A: The jar is clear glass. It is approximately 6 1/4" tall and 4 1/8" wide. It has a rubber gasket which does a very good job of holding the lid on tightly. The gasket will come off easily any time the lid is not "cinched" into place, as in the dishwasher. There are replacement gaskets available. I put my gaskets in a small lidded part of my silverware rack in the dishwasher. I like to use this container to mix powdered milk, pancake mix, and that sort of thing so I can shake it up with the lid cinched closed and then use whatever I want and refrigerate the rest. Works very well for me. **Q: Are these jars good for Sourdough Starters.?** A: This product works great for sourdough starters! I wanted a jar with traditional glass lid and capacity. The larger mouth provides ease of discarding starter at feeding time and helps keep the jar clean. For gas venting, I use either a tea cloth or paper towel with a rubber band to fasten. The quality of Italian glass is superb to withstand the rigors of sourdough; not to mention, that when not in use (rarely-haha), they look very elegant un the kitchen. **Q: Where are these jars manufactured?** A: I purchased 3 of these jars locally, and both the label and the jar itself says "made in Italy" **Q: Some people are using theses jars for fermenting vegetables. Perfect for my sour dough starter. Lid fits air tight. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great size and seal *by C***A on April 25, 2014* This is the perfect jar for my vanilla sugar. I use organic cane sugar, add a few vanilla pods and leave it for a few weeks. Voila! Delicious, relatively inexpensive vanilla sugar for baking or to add to my coffee or tea for an extra treat. This jar has a great seal, is easy to use, heavy glass and looks great on my pantry shelf with the other sizes that I have purchased for all of my flours, sugars, rice, baking soda, corn starch, pasta, etc. I wash the jars in my dishwasher before I use them. Simply remove the rubber gasket, which you should hand wash and air dry so that it doesn't dry out, and put the jar in the dishwasher for great sanitizing.
