Snap Pictures Like Lik!
If you are a fan of art photography and have wanted to try some of the techniques that the pros uses – I love Peter Lik’s work – then this is the book for you. A straight forward training on how to get the most out of your camera and what type of camera to use to get extraordinary shots. No, this isn’t going to give you mad skills with a cellphone or the $50 camera that came with an SD card and a case. But it will give you the ability to use lower and midrange cameras that give you control over key settings to capture images that will blow your mind. For example, night sky shots. Long exposure settings – 15 to 20 seconds – using the techniques described in this book will give you the night sky in motion. You can capture lightening, humming birds or the burst of street lights just before sunrise to make memorable pictures that you will want to print and mount. What about those perfect landscapes? Learn the trick to composite images using varying settings to assemble a landscape that jumps from the screen. This is not a book of abstract theory, but it does have a lot of technical information so give yourself time, work with what you learn. You will be glad that you did!

Well written, easy to follow
Four stars because this book was easy to read. Easy to follow and understand. Helps you understand the use of and the setting of your camera's modes / ISO, APERTURE and SPEED to get you out of the camera's auto mode and into being more creative.Four stars only because of the time the book was written and now, some of the links are no longer available.

If you want to learn how to take better photos with your DSLR
If you want to learn how to take better photos with your DSLR, buy this book!!As a freelance food photographer and a food blog owner, taking photos is my daily routine and sharpening my skills has always been my focus, for taking photos of all kind such as landscapes and portraits. I have read my books related to this topic, but this book is by far the most practical and easy-to-understand one. All the functions of your DSLR are very well explained in this book with visual graphics. The author also included many stunning photographs in order to show you the results of different camera settings. I especially loved the tricks that Brian teaches in this book. Can't wait to try the light painting! That's so cool!

Lots of great info on how to use a DSLR camera to the max.
This book was better than I expected. With most people today taking photographs with a smartphone, it was a great refresher on just how much more control one has over the raw image with a good DSLR camera. If you have never used a camera other than what is on your phone this is full of the type of information that will make you want to go out and buy a decent camera this afternoon. While I really like the point and click of smartphone cameras I rather miss the control and advantages of a heftier camera in hand, knowing the results can (should) be so much better. It's got me interested in making use of my old camera again.

Short high level introduction to photography
This is a short introductory high level book about photography. It spends about a paragraph on each topic, but includes very nice photos to illustrate many points. If you are new to photography is is a good place to start, if you have read other books about photography you are likely not to find anything new or in depth in this book. The book covers shutter speed effects and aperture effects, lighting, panning effects, light painitng, traffic patterns, earth rotation, motion against stillness, freezing action and use of filters.Ali Julia review

Great for those getting started in photography
This book is a great starting point to understanding how to use those unfamiliar settings on your camera. The author does a good job explaining what they do and how they interact. It is also a good review for those getting back into photography. At only 75 pages it is a quick read that covers the important topics succinctly.

Good book for picking the right camera
I'm thinking about buying a nice digital camera and after reading this book, I now realize that there are only two cameras to consider - Canon and Nikon. I like how the author Brian Black gives links to a handful of both the Canon and the Nikon that he recommends. Price range is from under $400 to over $1700 and broken down by budget-conscious to middle range and then top of the line. I pretty much stopped here because I really need to get the camera before I start working on dept of field and apertures and the like.

Definitely Recommended
I love this book. Being a visual person, I like how Brian provide sample images to make the explanation even clearer. Not only he explained the necessity of each part of the camera, he also gave some illustrated some of it for better understanding. I would agree that light is the most important part in creating a very good image. He enumerates how lighting can make or break your photos. That's why the very first topic he discussed is this book is about it. I'm glad that I was able to read this book. This is a big help. Thanks!

Exposure Mastery - an understanding of the basic working of my camera!
Although I have used a camera for many years, firstly 35mm and then digital, I never really understood the relationship between the three setting of aperture, speed and ISO. This book has explained in simple terms how they interact and what each does. After reading it through I began to pick out various chapters and worked with the manual settings on my camera to explore these relationships. After many hours of trial and error and reference to the text I feel that I can now set up a shot with reasonable (if basic) skill, without resorting to the tried and tested Auto setting and flash. I look forward to some better weather so that I can go out and try a few real photographs based on my new understanding and hope that my photography improves. Well written, simple descriptions and good basic information.

The importance of working with light to the creative photographer ...
Cameras are everywhere, and everywhere are people making images. But I'd guess over 90% of all pictures taken use the automatic or pre-set features of the camera. They guarantee capturing an image but often they are bland/samey/not how you remembered seeing the scene or object. To breakout of mediocrity any camera enthusiast needs to master exposure and its three components - aperture, shutter speed and ISO. Once you are in control of your camera and these setting you can really let your creative juices flow and make different, exciting, unusual, eye-catching images - and you don't have to have a really expensive camera to achieve these results.Great pictures are a combination of creativity and technology. You may see a really interesting object or person or find an unusual viewpoint but if you cannot control the camera the chances are you won't do it justice.Brian Black is very aware of this and put pen to paper to help you master these three distinct yet inextricable related ideas. Further he gives you ideas of how to apply your newly mastered knowledge to produce the sort of images you see in the glossy magazines. This book is not dealing with new or ground breaking camera techniques but Brian has pulled the information together in a consumable form for easy digestion. And of course like any newly acquired skill unless you practice, practice, practice you won't gain the long term benefit.

Great introduction to basic photography skills
I got this in conjunction with an ‘introduction to digital photography’ course that I took as evening classes. I definitely didn’t take in all the information on the first read but it’s short enough to go back over it again and again. I like that he repeats the points over and again as for me, this will help to reinforce the information. I’m looking forward to putting what I’ve read into practice - when it stops raining!

Well worth the purchase.
This book is spot on for the amateur or beginner photographer who would like to do a lot more than just take snaps. I was impressed by how simple it can be to improve your photography, even to the point of capturing lightening. It also pointed out all the little mistakes I'd been making over the years. Included are helpful illustrations, showing the before and and after affects being put into practice. There are also links included to different cameras, tripods and other photo equipment and lots of helpful advice on what you need for the type of photograph you want. All in all I thought this one of the best books on digital photography out there. Well worth the purchase.

Good introduction to photographic exposure
This book has given me inspiration to experiment with new photographic techniques. Though there are some basic concepts that I already understood, I have also learned some new techniques to experiment with and would recommend this book to beginners and amateur photographers alike. Some methods could have done with expanding upon with examples but experimentation is the name of the game with photography and this book isn't written for any specific camera make. All in all a great introduction to the world of photographic exposure.
