I was in my early 20's when I first read ...
I was in my early 20's when I first read this book and deeply regret not attending one Adams's Yosemite workshops. This book is a gem and methodically covers every aspect of the print making process. I bought it used at a bargain price because the original I had was lost in a nasty divorce.

Old and New.
Enjoyed the history of Ansel's process getting to a good b&w print, and all the elements he considered along the way. The importance of paper types and how different ones can bring out important qualities of a photo to take a photo to another level. Since I no longer do my own developing and printing, and instead use programs like Photoshop, keeping an eye on just what aspect and tonal range of a picture is still necessary. Also enjoyed seeing more of Ansel's photos.

Nice to have this book in my library again
I had this book back in college when I was a photography major - this is a classic text that just belongs in all photographers' library's. just because. 5-stars

photographic fundamentals
This is the second book purchased having recently lost the first. This book thoroughly explains the zone metering system, a system that is the foundation of understanding light and exposure. Mr. Adams goes through step by step the process of how film records light but never surrendering the final image and vision to the meter. A must read for all aspiring photographers.

Beautiful
If you long for the days when photography, real photography, was black and white on film, then you will love this book. Of commercial necessity it has been years since I maintained my own darkroom and printed my own prints . . but how I miss the magic! This book brings it all back and in so doing opens some new creative channels in my mind as to how to get beautiful prints in the digital age. If you're a purist, you will love this book. If you are a pragmatist you will find ways to correlate traditional methods to digital processing and printing (even though the book does not address the topic of digital at all.) If you are serious about b/w get this book then work with your own shots and in your own workflow until you can emulate the look of this master.

I purchased the trilogy of these books, The Camera, The Negative and The Print as I wished to reintroduce myself to the magic of film based photography. Ansel Adams was a formative photographer, he was also methodical, systematic and philosophical. If you enjoy detailed, clear and concise information combined with art then I think you will enjoy his approach. Yes, these books were written before the mass introduction of digital media, but knowing the roots of any subject is bound to produce insights and connections. Photography is about images, emotions and interpretation. You may consider little value in understanding something of different film types, papers and developers, but digital manipulation seeks to replicate these same effects with filters and settings and understanding the origins of the processes involved may enhance your understanding of where we are now. You never know you may even try using film again, you just need to slow down a bit, but that may not be a bad thing for any us, after all photography is about looking, really looking and seeing things others can't see.
