Hair rock, from the '90's
Firehouse are fairly anonymous in the UK, but have at least 2 platinum records in the US, as well as best new rock artist 1991 (American Music Awards), beating Nirvana among others. They're still going, and their latest CD Prime Time is very good. This is a retrospective view of mainly their first 3 releases. It contains most of their radio hits (but not "Shake & Tumble", their first hit, for some reason), including my favourite number "Reach For the Sky", off their second album (Hold Your Fire). At the time the hair was long, the shirts hung open, and the attitude was cool and surly.Vocals are interesting. CJ has a very good vocal range, vaguely Guns & Roses meets Motley Crue, but he can go higher than either, and uses his diaphragm well. He also reminds me of Stryper! The guitarist is very good. He's not quite Van Halen, but he can play very fast when he wants to, has a nice vibrato, and an excellent rhythm sound. However, some of the choruses feel a bit generic, and more variety in style (which they do have) would have been nice. That's one of the problems with "Best of" CD's, the hits aren't necessarily the best songs. Personally I think their best album is the latest (Prime Time), which is more modern in feel, but some of their best individual songs are on the older CD's, so for the best of both worlds get this and PT! Shame about Shake & Tumble...
