1959-color-Russian language with English subtitles. Enjoy excellent special effects in the amazing Russian science fiction classic about the race to be first on Mars. During the voyage to the Red Planet, the unexpected occurs, and it becomes a battle for survival. Also included on this dvd is the movie Battle Beyond The Sun, the inferior English dubbed version of The Sky Calls directed by Francis Ford Coppola!

Great Russian Sci Fi from 1959
Quite an ambitious movie for 1959. This is the original...They edited this into "Battle Beyond the Sun" and chopped it up, which is also included on the DVD. The disc is one of those on demand DVDs and contains no bonus features. The product is as stated: With English subtitles. Picture quality could be better. The movie itself has the expected Russian Propaganda which I find interesting.

Most Impressive Print.
The Transfer print was fantastic. I was so impressed being used to the flat copies that American International put out. And I love the fact you can watch with the original Russian Language. Voice dubbing sucks.

An impressive early sci fi film
This Russian effort is impressive given that it was done years before the moon landing. This version is much better than the americanized version, Battle Beyond The Sun. You can compare the 2 versions as they're both on this dvd.

Old Soviet Science Fiction
I like old Soviet films, and I like old Science Fiction, and Horror movies. This being the case I ordered the sky calls because I was curious. Remember these are old sci-fi movies! Any way the movies were not that bad, in fact I enjoyed watching them. Seeing the different approach the Soviets had to space travel, as well as some socialist ideology bleeding through the dialog. All in all I consider the movies pretty good old B movie grade.

The Sky Calls (also included Battle Beyond the Sun) (PR Studios DVD-R)
Fair but dull late '50s color Russian-made, English-subtitled sci-fi. Has a fair amount of, typical for the era, pro-Russian propaganda and derisive depiction of the American way of life. Russian scientists and cosmonauts plan a trip to Mars but in the meantime rescue and aid a pair of US astronauts. When the Americans learn of the Russian plan, (it's no secret) they are ordered by their superiors to head to the Red Planet first, even though they're ill-prepared. Of course the Russians have to save the astronauts bacon yet again and end up on one of Mars's satellites. The Mars plan is kaput and now everyone has to figure out a way to return to Earth. Some nice visuals and the Mars rise effect as seen from the satellite is impressive. The slog through the story is dull though. Not much exciting action here. The quality of the PR Studios DVD of The Sky Calls is very good. The color is great and the picture is clear. Also included is Battle Beyond the Sun, the Roger Corman-ized version of The Sky Calls, with dubbing, added scenes, and a pair of yucky monsters. The quality of this film is only so-so. This DVD is recommended for fans of un-embellished Russian imports.
